East Texas
Husband has retired and we are once again visiting Lake Fork.
We are looking at homes in the area on Realtor.com. and will contact the realtor we met with 5 years ago.
How much has the area changed and any info on the Keystone Pipeline would be appreciated.
We plan to go in early June to experience some heat. Any ideas of what we must see.

...........You will be so close to La. that far eastern Tx aren't or will not suffer the effects of drought that the DFW area and west possibly will ! Both The Brazos
and Lower Colorado River Authorities are being sued by various water users due to increasing demand and decreasing supply .
............My guess is that the Pipeline will definitely get built as well as others because of the destruction caused by train derailments carrying unrefined crude oil . Obama is now on board for the export of liquid natural gas to Europe and Asia to help them move away from Russia as their sole supplier , so expect more pipelines to move gas to the south and east coasts where the facilities will be constructed to liquifey NG for export ! I can't comment on any changes because I'm not familiar with that geographic area of Tx . , fordy

That's not too terribly far from me as the crow flies. If you want to experience heat wait until August. June really doesn't give you a good idea of true summer here. Hope you like hot, humid and mosquitos big enough to carry off small children. I try to take a vacation during the worst of it.....and I'm from here!
The pipeline will end up getting built. I can't imagine it not happening. Too many people are for it.

Yep lived on Lake Fork a few months . And even in June by nine in the morning you could catch a quart of water running down your arms . Those cowboys carried six guns just to shoot sketers with Best thing I remember is the East Texas Hamburger Co ,good place to eat . When I was there in Alba they have the Yuall Come Back Cafe don't know if it is still there or not .
I like McCallen Texas much better in the winter time than East Texas

not totally sure but from what ive seen keystone will be west of you. it is hot and bugs are about. ive seen projection that the tx gulf cost is ready for a boon with liquid natural gas exports. baytown to corpus christi
dont see a problem just a booming economy like n &s dekota
jobs are good
we could have done this in 08 and be enjoying the trickle down now its not rocket sicense

If you really want heat visit in mid August.
According to these maps the pipeline will go East of Lake Fork.
http://www.nacstop.org/KXL_county_maps.html
I don't know how much the area has changed but I would guess a lot since Dallas is growing exponentially in that direction. I'd grab that land now before it gets too expensive.
Sawmill Jim, Holy Cow Dude! McCallen Texas? You could almost chunk a rock at Mexico!

Thanks everyone.
My husband is a bass fisherman and just loves the area. He just retired and is ready to move now.
This will be one of many visits. I am ready to leave the North. I have not ridden my horses it is very depressing. The heat suits us more than all this cold, ice, snow and wind just terrible.
I love Winnsboro but worry about the pipeline.

You might try the Tyler or Athens area unless you are just stuck on Lake Fork. LF has the best bass fishing in the state and perhaps this part of the country. But it lacks good access to things like great healthcare, shopping, restaurants, etc.. But Athens has a good bass lake (Lake Athens) and is near Purtis Creek in Eustace which is small but excellent for bass fishing. Close to Tyler for good hospitals, restaurants, shopping, etc..
Lake Athens used to have the biggest crooks in the state running it. The city is taking steps to remedy that situation - we'll see in the May election. So if that matters, you might want to wait. Otherwise, good people in that town.
Have you checked the Keystone route maps? I don't think the approved route or the alternative gets close to Lake Fork (but it will be close to Winnsboro)

I live in the area you're talking about. Plenty of places are available that can take horses if you're looking for farms/ranches, and prices aren't all that bad. I live near sections of the pipeline. So far, everything is buried, only problems have been with protesters during construction. All the heavy equipment is out of my immediate area. Pipeline runs just east of Winnsboro.
Lake Fork is in pretty good shape as far as water levels go; some of the other lakes aren't doing so well from the drought. We've had a lot of tree kill from the 2011 drought, so fire season this year may be bad.
We've been in this area since 2009, moved from Jefferson before that...love the East Texas area.

I grew up in Gilmer and now live in Rusk. Both places are beautiful country. I would be happy to retire in either area.

Thanks for the info.
We are going to fly into Dallas and visit Tyler. My husband has nonhodgins lymphoma so we need to be near some good health care centers. We drive 11/2 hours for chemo and care now. He is doing well and wants to spend his time fishing. We are moving the homestead from here so this is huge.
Continue with any info love HT support.

June is hit or miss for heat, try July or Aug if you want it at its hottest, but also remember
with shade and a breeze even 100's are comfortable.
However parking lots are killers.

Once a pipeline, any pipeline, is in the ground, the only way you'd ever know is if there's a sign where it crosses the highway... or a narrow strip (15 to 60 or so feet wide) going through timber... There are hundreds of thousands of miles of pipelines, crisscrossing the country... XL is just one with a 'name'...

I lived on Lake Fork and worked in Quitman. Excellent hospitals and Oncologists in Tyler, and many wonderful small towns in that area. I think you both will love it there.

Lake Fork is less than an hours drive from downtown Tyler. My daughter said to avoid Tyler like the plague. Anywhere north of I20 is good. Mineola is nice. If I were to move to the area, which is a possibility, I would look between Mineola and Lake Fork. Lindale has the best schools in the area for people that it matters to.

Your right! I have 300 acres in Eastern OK and the back of the property through the hills (Yes hills in Eastern OK) is a pipeline. I have two spots on the entire property that show where the pipeline is. I get a low flying plane every year checking it out. Seriously, once in ground you just cannot dig near it. Now my daughter lives in Stillwater and driving through Cushing is where the pipeline for Keystone starts was a mess digging there way to Texas. As soon as covered you will not know it is there.
