Grass seed

So I have asked some questions before and am still not quite sure of the answer. Can you frost seed grass seed or just smaller legumes? I am wanting to try the frost seeding on some pastures ( even though I am still skeptical, haha) but also have our whole yard to do this year. Thoughts??

You can frost seed grass seed, it all depends on the weather, IF you get a stand. IF it sprouts and takes root before it dries out too much, you did good. Grass seed does better planted into the soil, or broadcast and covered. Lawns and yards need to be worked, leveled and seeded (broadcast) and the seed covered. Moisture is important, If it dries out too much the seed dies....James

You can broadcast oats. I did this when we had the pond dug and needed some type of erosion control.

These kinds of seed - grasses and small grains - want a whole lot of seed scattered around and placed between a 1/4 inch and 1-1/2 inch deep, bigger the seed the deeper it can be.

They want to be in damp soil for a bit to sprout and grow.

Beyond that, they are not too fussy about getting anything exactly right.

If you frost seed or hand scatter or such, just use more seed. If you get a $10,000 fancy small seed drill with packer wheels, precise seed depth, then you can plant less seed per acre.

But either way, if you get lucky with that bit of rain after you plant, you will end up with a crop.

Its not all that fussy.

For most grass seed soil ''contact'' is more important than soil ''cover''.
