Need advice on shipping
Im going to buy a COPAR Panzer garden tractor. Its WAY back East. It has to be shipped. Ive never done anything like that before. How am I protected in that I get whats been showed me in pics.
Hows the seller protected? IF its cause he gets paid before he ships, I gotta tell ya, that makes me NERVOUS.
The go between that is helping the seller, cause he have a puter, has taken pics of one and sent them to me. Im good with it. Just need some advice.
Go between has givin me both his and sellers ph#. Go between says that theres a truck picking up loads running from there to OKC. Would doing that be any cheaper OR reliable than shipping it with a Co in that business?
Thanks guys for all help.
Theres pics of them in U Tubes plowing.

Any chance someone on HT can help? If you can provide a general location, maybe someone here can mosey by and check it out. Adding that requirement to the negotiation may reveal a scam if it's true.

I looked, and I DID put in tht I have both the go between Ph# AND the sellers Ph#. I didnt want to talk to either of them UNTIL I had gotten the advice I was seeking on here.
This is NOT a Craigslist scam. I put in a ad in a antique steam and gas forum called Smokstak. The middleman replied cause the owner dosent have a puter. I DIDNT put in MY Ph#
Aas to where its at, I MAY have the location in our 1/2 doz E mails back and forth, Ill check.

If you are nervous you probably should go with your gut and back away.
The specialty forum you mention; Smokestak, does anyone there know this party? Is any member close by? Do you want this item enough to go look at it yourself? If you are talking big bucks you probably should invest some time and research the item and the seller.
Or you can just send the cashier's check in the total amount and hold your breath.

Its $800. Im nervous, yes, cause of the money, AND cause ive never done this before in 66yrs. Im not nervious as to the deal possibly being shady, which it might. That dont bother me as much as just not knowing the ins and outs of shipping something long distances.

If you pay via paypal you are protected as a buyer. Although he will have to accept the money via paypal. Maybe this "go between" will accept it for the "seller". You only have 30 days,i believe, to file a dispute on paypal so make sure you get it and inspect it before the time is up. They hold the money until you get the get the item.

Talked to my boy tonight. FRI. He figured its a 5hr drive one way, so hes going to try to get truck where he works, and we drive up there on a weekend hes free. I called the owner and the go between. Told the owner I was interested. He said he was too old to deal with shipping. So me and boy decided to go up and get it. He ll be gone tomorrow, the owner that is, so Ill call him Monday to tell him were coming up and that I want it.

Bill, save your money for a down payment on a house. You don't need another tractor

I need something to do garden with. I took my 1934 Standard Twin garden tractor out last Sat and tried to plow with it. Walk behind. It did great on straight aways, BUT, it dosent have brakes, which makes it a bear to turn around. Likta killed me. IF I cant handle it now, I sure wont handle it 10/20yrs from now. Im selling it.

When dealing with shipping, it is important to make sure the carrier is qualified and legal. I wouldn't even consider a hauler unless they can prove they have cargo insurance and experience hauling equipment. If They do have a wreck without cargo insurance you're out of luck for compensation. Loading and securing equipment also takes a certain amount of skill and needs to meet specific guidelines so experience counts.
Also, is this a flat rate back haul? Often drivers find something that pays better and cancel. Have you made any arrangements for on time delivery or discounts for late delivery.
I'm not keen on the idea of a go between because they often forget important details or don't ask the right questions. Call these people yourself.

Bill you can buy a brand new tiller for less than 800 dollars, get a warranty and everything. I wouldn't risk 800 dollars sight unseen on something that might not even be what you pay for, or start or anything

Wow, talk about paint an industry as a bunch of crooks with a broad swipe of that brush. Like all truckers are nothing but swindlers and crooks.
If you are seriously going to look at shipping this on a common carrier, either hire a broker or else do your homework.
To haul something like this would require common authority. All you have to do for that is ask the carrier for his MC number and then verify that at the fmcsa website. It's public record. If you hire someone, then ask for a certificate of insurance with you listed as the certificate holder from the insurance carrier, not the motor carrier themself.
Since this is a single tractor, some questions are going to come up: width, height and weight being the biggies. If it's a small tractor, it's not going to fill up the truck so that will also make a difference. Either way, plan on $2.50 per mile to get it moved from zip code to zip code. I personally use Google maps for figuring my miles, others use pcmiler practice miles which can be off 10%.
Asking for a discount if the truck is late is a good way to listen to a dial tone. There's a lot more to scheduling a shipment than just saying I want it on these dates. Equipment availability and location just being two of those items.

My husband and I have an equipment hauling company and we often mop up the messes created by other companies so I speak from experience. There are a lot of good guys out there but they are not all good and not all capable. Would it not be better to ask questions and know you have a good one with insurance or is it better to roll the dice? We just spent all day yesterday hauling a telehandler 450 miles and we were the 5th carrier that had promised to do the job. We were the only one that didn't ask for a $500 deposit.
We have a new client because we kept our word but that client was pretty terse and angry by the time he called us.

I have used UShip.com before to haul some stuff. Basically you post a job and shippers will bid on it. A lot of times it is an independent shipper but you can see a history of feedback on the person before you go with them. If they have a good rating on the website they are probably trustworthy.
