Snip:
"Though this dog did not come from a puppy mill, Mac Donald said it was in a similar state to what those dogs would look like."

A hard time believing that dogs in puppy mills look like that? They do if they are non shedding.

Puppy mill owners have no regard for the dogs. All they care about is a quick buck. That cute puppy in the pet store? Chances are it's mother is living a miserable existence in a cage, neglected and sick. I have helped place rescued dogs from those mills and it is a horrid existence. No creature should ever be treated in such a way.
God Bless those that open their hearts and pocket books to help those poor dogs! Animal abusers are the worst form of trash there is.

more common then you know
I worked as a certified pet groomer for 22 years. Unfortunately...dogs in this condition are a LOT more common then you know. AND nine times out of ten...they are not owned by puppy mills but by private pet owners. One of the reasons I retired is I got tired of dealing with these people and NOT being able to run them into a wall!

There are not a lot of reputable pet stores that will purchase from a puppy mill. How do I know? Used to own a pet shop. I was very closely involved with that industry for decades.
One of THE MOST IMPORTANT things in running a successful shop is to have healthy, well socialized animals and making a good match with your customer. Buying sick, genetically inferior animals that are neurotic because they have been caged their whole life is not a path to success. You will quickly incur massive vet bills both before and after the sale, expose your workers as well as other animals to disease and your customers will not be singing your praises after they take such critter home.
Not only that - people have this mistaken notion that people have pet shops because they somehow only care about making a buck. A pet shop is not going to make you wealthy. The vast majority of independent pet shops choose to spend their time around animals because they love them - not because they despise them and don't want to care for them. They have NO desire to support puppy mills or a breeder of any other kind of animal that does not properly care for and socialize those animals.
I worked as a vet tech for many years. The vet I worked for was on the board of some rather large rescue groups. I have personally fostered hundreds of rescued dogs, cats, birds, small animals and horses. The vast majority of critters that are in that shape are coming from private homes or are strays.
I'm not saying there are not horrible puppy mills out there. Most pet shops do not purchase from them. This is a notion that has been pushed by groups that have a political agenda.
Just sayin'

So quick to blame the puppy mill breeders.
But if people would not support them they would go out of business. All people care about is getting that cheap puppy at the pet store and they do not really care where it came from. And then after a year the kids get bored with it and it sits outside in a small kennel forgotten about. Happens all the time.

I've known several people who bought those puppy mill puppies in the pet store because they felt sorry for them! And so the puppy mill owner succeeds in moving his product once again! And now the private breeders are getting hammered by the same laws that have been developed to deal with the puppy mill people. If everyone did their research and bought puppies from reputable breeders who don't churn out litter after litter, raise one litter at a time preferably in their home, did health screenings on their breeders, and took back every dog they put on the ground if the owner no longer wanted it, this world would be a better place!
Yes, there are idiot private owners out there breeding their backyard dogs to make a buck, too, and they are no better than the puppy mills. AND, those pups at the pet store are NOT cheap!
I live in a rural area where the attitude towards dogs and cats is that they are dispensable and of no value, just property. People allow intact dogs to run at large where they end up getting hit on the roads - I have seen more dead dogs on the side of the road in the last year living out here than I have seen in nearly fifty years of my life. It's sick. Those people are sick. Definitely part of the less than average half of our population!

This is a soapbox of mine and something I am extremely passionate about.
Thousands of purebred dogs are put down every year while people buy the cute puppy from the pet store or backyard breeder.
I have a purebred JRT right here beside me and have had the pleasure of sharing my life and the rest of theirs, with 2 purebred Aussies, all from rescues.
Adopt before shopping. You save a rescue as well as refusing to support the livelihood of people trying to make a buck off a dog, while millions die unwanted yearly.

Can you spot the irony here? No, go back and read your sig line.
It is no worse to make a buck off a dog than it is to make a buck off a cow, sheep, or goat. Treating animals poorly is what is wrong. Breeding inferior, defective animals is wrong. Lumping all dog breeders into one group is the same as accusing you of running a CAFO because that is what some livestock owners do.
I've adopted several dogs and purchased 2 purebreds because there was something particular we wanted/needed in that breed. I'm glad there are good breeders out there.

I completely disagree and rather than start an argument I will leave it at that. You obviously see a companion pet as livestock and I do not.
If every dog breeder was responsible there would be no issue, sadly that is not the case.

What makes it obvious that I think of pets as livestock? My chickens and pigs do not sleep in my bed, but my pet does. I also do not eat my pets.
If I understand you correctly, not until every dog breeder is responsible there should be no purebred dogs bred?
Why do you paint with such a broad brush? Why not just be against the bad actors and I will happily join you on your soap box?

Nice try, so tell us all how many millions of sheep are euthanized in shelters each year. None? Ok. Then why'd you chime in with that?
Why de-rail a debate with useless, not on topic points?

The point is quite on topic because it is a valid analogy. I make the analogy because that individual thinks it is OK to advertise that she breeds purebred animals to make a buck but believes it is wrong to breed purebred dogs to make a buck. Not much difference there. I'm glad there are responsible breeders out there for certain dogs because some folks need a proper LGD or herder, or maybe they just like a certain look.
On my I dislike people who paint with broad brushes because they don't like a minority of a given group. I'm happy that she promotes shelter adoptions. One can do that without implying all dog breeders are irresponsible.

My point was quite clear to those who were willing to see it. If you Deke01 have a personal issue with me then PM me.
Good day.

Obviously I did see that statement because used those words in posing a question to you. My point was also clear, I thought, but I'll try to make it another way.
You wouldn't buy supposedly purebred sheep breeding stock from a place that took in stray sheep, would you? It is great, I applaud you for adopting shelter pets. But if others want or need a registration certificate for breeding purposes, they have to go to a purebred breeder. Not all purebred dog breeders are "puppy mills," at least in the sense of running substandard operations.
I do not have a personal issue with you. You posted a message in a public forum and so did I. I simply disagree with one point you made. I applaud your concern for animal welfare.
I do not think anyone should purchase dogs from pet stores. When we purchased our pup Dalmatian that is currently whining at me to play, we wanted to meet the breeder, know that he was raised inside a home with a family, and that his parents were of good quality.

I've NEVER seen a cheap puppy in a pet store!
