What kind of critter is in my house?

I have a bag of pecans in the shell in my back room. This morning I get ready to put my boots on and find 3 of them inside of one boot. My boots were 20 feet from the bag of pecans ????

Well, I'd say it's likely a mouse, but I also have a toddler here who does such things.

Whatever you do ... show no fear and do not look them in the eye!

In this area, I'd suspect a pack rat. Don't think you have such critters, though. Chipmunk, maybe.

Mice can move surprising amounts of weight, however. Our neighbors, who own a vacation cabin up the road, tell a story of a mouse that moved the contents of an entire bag of spiral pasta from the kitchen upstairs to their bedroom over the space of about a week. They found the pasta hidden in a boot.

My guess would be squirrel. They can get in fairly small holes and once they find a stash of seed or nuts they will keep coming.

Yeah, I think anyone who lives in the western US has pack rat horror stories. Vehicle damage, missing objects, chewed through plumbing and wiring, re-arranged pantry contents ...

I started a BBQ grill last month and the propane was a bit slow to catch, so it went, "WHOOMPH!" when it finally did. Made me jump, big adrenalin rush. Pack rat ran out of the grill about a heartbeat later and went over my foot. I screamed like a little girl, and normally, I'm not the type who squeals over rodents. Figured the pack rat probably was more startled than I was, though.

We have a mouse who stores an incredible amount of large dog kibbles in our couch. We call it our SHTF stash. We clean it out often but it always grows back.

Setting some traps might help, otherwise that is just gross, you know the poop where they eat right??

As someone who deals with removing unwanted animal visitors professionally, my vote is mouse. I've seen them color code different colored dog food in vases on a shelf in an upstairs closet. They can move some amazing things, some amazing distances one mouthful at a time.
