Drive through Gate???

I'm tired of getting out in the cold, wind, snow and mud to open the gate,
drive through, and do it again to close the gate.

I thought I had a used cattle guard purchased, but the deal fell through,,and new, at $2,000, is just to expensive.

Right now I have a rope gate with 1 electric wire across,,this is easier than the barbed wire gate I used before,,but I getting more old & lazy,,,soooo,,

Anyone have any experience with these??
or
have any great inventive ideas??
ps, I cant simply fence off the road,,because the road changes with the snow drifts.

i saw one once driving down the road stopped and backed up to check it out. it had post on each end with a cross piece across top of post. post were about 12' high. it had a post in the center and the gate was attached to the center post with round pipe larger than the diameter of the center post. the gate was hanging on cable attached to the top cross piece and wraped a half thun around the center post then to the gate. you drove up to the gate and stopped at a post that had the gate release on it, roll down window, released the gate and bumped it with the bumper. gate winds tighter on cable and sleeves slides up the center post. gate opens and you drive thru gate closed because the weight of the gate and the half turn around center post. other side worked the same way. have to wrap cable opposite to opperate in differeent directions

I read somewhere that used oil field pipe was radioactive. How much I don't know.
Just saying, whether it makes any difference or not.

I know a few ranchers that tried both those gates. Didn't take a full season for the boss cows to figure out they could walk right through them. Others were soon to follow.

The bump gate though might be something to try. But I think I'd stick with the good old cattle guard if you can find pipe cheap enough. Old field pipe here is no more radioactive then the prairies your driving across.

Fence the drive and yard to avoid the reason for the gate. You could also get an electric gate. They're usually operated with a solar panel and battery. You just roll down the window and enter a code.

I'm curious how they could walk right through them,,,does the electric shock quit?? I can hold them now with a single wire.

The bump gate looks good,,But I'm worried about snow drifting at the gate.
Same with the electric gate openers.

I really don't want to spent the $ for a cattle guard,,even if I build it,,there is the concrete foundation and liability if it were to fail on someone who shouldn't be crossing it anyway.

Again I can't fence the road to it, as the road changes, depending on where the wind decides to place its snow drifts.

There must be something,,I may just try the Ecklund,,

Thanks

That all depends on the area of the drilling... Some areas are really hot. Others it's not a worry...

One thing you will find though is that all used drill pipe will be magnetized from spinning in the ground... That make welding it a lot more interesting.. You can wrap your ground around the pipe several times. If that doesn't make welding easier, try wrapping it around the pipe in the other direction... and if all else fails, you can try reversing the polarity on your cables..

I've welded more than my share of drill pipe building racks in the oil fields in TX... it takes a lot of practice. You can usually figure out what you need to do by carrying a nail and a small bar magnet...
