naming your farm

My wife and i bought a small farm last year, i think a farm ought to have a name ,a name people can remember, a name that stands out. This being said i ve came up with a name that i think that meets all this, the only problem is my wife hates it.......Hardship Hills what do you all thinks?

There are some farm names like that around here. One is Back Acres, another Rancho NoGotta, another is Rancho Costalotta. I smile every time I drive by. That said, you might want to work more on the name with the wife - no need for more hardships in your hills!

We name every one of our places. The place where we are now is named "Thistle Dew".

Sounds kind of depressing. Why not something a little more upbeat?

Maybe she'll agree to "No Frills Hills"?

We went literal, but in Swedish since the original village nearby was a Swedish mining outpost: Skogengård -- "forest farm". It was a little easier to say and spell than trollsländagård -- "dragonfly farm".

ours is simply called "the farm". the name on the property title is actually sunnyview farms, i'm told its from when the property used to be a operating plum orchard.

In my area, naming one's place is kind of a yuppy thing.
Large farms and ranches will have a DBA-type of name, but those of us on smaller properties (160ac and down) usually just have "our place."

I agree with others that it's negative thinking. You don't really mean "hardship" do you, or you wouldn't have bought the place. My farm has a business name that we put on the checks when I was in partnership with my parents, and the milk check came in that name, but it's not used by people around me. It is a name based on the area with a small nod to language used by the country people around here. It's a lot nicer when it's personal to you. But that's just my opinion.

That's kinda how I view it. When Gramma took me back to where she grew up she pointed to places and said "that's the Johnson place, they raised dairy cows," or "that's where the Jones' lived, they had 10 kids." Can't say I really remember her pointing and saying that's the "Not-a-lota-acres farm."

To me it screams we just moved from the city and are now going to go play at being a farmer.

Then again, it's your place call it what ya want I guess.

I agree that Hardship Hills sounds grumpy and depressing. If you're just naming it for the 2 of you then it doesn't matter. But if you're going to be selling at farmer's markets or marketing anything else the name is important. And I think it is only 'yuppified' if it's not a working farm.

I like "Belly Acres Garden", but wife won't ok that. She's not fond of "Squirrel Manor" either.

To be fair, one of these days we plan to hang a sign out at our gate that says, "Welcome to South Nebraska"
We're in Kansas, barely, but never claim it. We just don't watch enough Nascar to be Kansans.
