I Just Don't Understand People

I will agree we are going through hard times. Propane prices are through the roof and I'm sure many are going to wood heat.

Around here there is two sources of cheap firewood but you have to cut it. One source is Slab Wood from sawmills $20 a cord. The other is cutting on Government Land for Free just have to get Permit.

Today I went to get Permits, I mentioned probably people lining up for Permits? No people don't want to put out the effort they want it cut, split and loaded on their Truck. Like the Road Kill Deer they don't want to Gut or Load them, much less cut them up.

What the heck I just can't feel sorry for some when it comes to this.

I personally don't think a lot of people have the know how or equipment to get those free resources.

Work ethics are being taught anymore

$20 a cord? I would so be there

So many people want everything but not many want to work for it..

BigRockPile- glad I signed in to lurk around. Just called the husband to tell him about the permit deal for cutting on Govt land. He's going to look into it as we're both willing to put forth effort to keep the woodstove going, saving on the oil bill.

thanks for the tip!

(there's a house down the street who uses that slab wood to heat his home, so we knew about that deal)

I've offered folks free produce and they might deign to accept it if you pick it, clean it and deliver it to them. They'd much prefer that it be cooked into something or made into salsa and such first

That's very judgemental. Are you certain that these people are all lazy or is there a chance that many are as poor as you have previously mentioned and they may not have access to vehicles, fuel for said vehicles or the tools needed or are they even aware they can cut for free.

Perhaps you could use your position with the church to let people know of these resources.

Seems to me this would be an opportunity for you to make money. Is there anything stopping you from selling that wood to people who don't have the resources or ability to go get that wood for themselves?

We're one of those "lazy" people who don't cut up our own deer. In reality, we'd love to do it but don't have anywhere to dispose of the bones, hides, and guts. We don't have land we can dump it on, and we don't have a compost area where the dogs can't get it. Oh yeah, and we don't really have the money to go out and buy a grinder, though we're saving up for one.

So, try not to think the worst of everyone...perhaps people have a reason, not an excuse.

I agree, why not take this as an opportunity to make a little cash for yourself?

I swear, I will never understand people, opportunity to make money and yet don't take it. It's hard to feel sorry for people like that.

Well its illegal to sell the wood cut on Government Land. Some may not have Saw or Pickup but if they are wanting to cut their heating cost one season would pay for a Chainsaw and Pickup.

Far as Deer most around here have place to put cleanings we just dump behind the house. Went for years without a Grinder then got $10 Hand Grinder, now we're Blessed with an Electric one. Oh here can dump cleanings in the woods on Government Land, was told to by Local Agent.

I've offered Extra Vegetables all they had to do is walk a block and pick them. They won't do it.

Yes people know, they will go as far as to get on the list for Road Kill, they will get Permits to cut Firewood but very few follow through. But same people with pop a Deer from the road with .22 or asked state to bring them wood or Propane because they are out.

Far as me being Church Leader we have people come every few months wanting money for one thing or another. If we don't have the money we will offer to help in other ways, like one family wanted $100 for a Refrigerator we had a good running one that we was going to let them have. They didn't want it. I have turned people down when they come to the Church asking for just too much.

I have been without, needed help but always figured out a way to help the one helping me. Now anyone moves into the area I always let them know where to get everything they could need, give them my Phone number if they need something. I will give them a lift up but I'm getting way too old to be carrying them.

True and how many really have a wood burning stove to burn that wood in. Nobody knows that at all unless the person has been to their house. I sure don't have any way to burn wood, and sure can't go out and get a outdoor furnace either. And in no way as the population gets older and older to they want to go out and cut or pick up or load wood, it just is not in the cards for a lot of folks even if propane is high and electric is going higher in the next few years, some just can't do it Period.
And even if they do have a fire place when was it last used? Nobody knows that either maybe they have one but it is in disrepair, people just can't fling out money to fix up things like that. It is much easier to go out and get a space heater or two to supplement their propane use instead of hauling wood for which needs to have a place to store it etc. etc.

And to get back to OP. With Propane prices getting so high there is several options.

Pay the High Price.

Buy ahead in the Spring when prices are cheaper. We Locked in for Winters worth in May, paid on it each month for 10 months.

Go Electric which here will cost as much as Propane.

Then there is Wood Heat. Either have to buy it from a cutter. Have your own Woods to cut or find either Free or cheap wood to cut. If you decide to go with Firewood and you decided to cut it yourself you need to realize you need a Chainsaw and Pickup and know how to use it.

Big Rockpile about 20 years ago we put our name on a list with the local police dept. It was an unseasonably warm Nov. day when the police called about a deer roadkill about 7 miles from our house. I was at home and my husband was at work about 35 miles away. I told the police I would get it. Don't remember at what point I got the tag for it but took care of that. Luckily it was on a main hwy because I'd pick up one side of the deer to put it into the car trunk and the other side would flop out. If a neighbor's brother hadn't probably seen the amusing predicament and helped that carcass would still be there. Anyway, got the small doe home and knew with the temps. and not sure how much internal damage done that it needed to be processed right away. We always keep sharp knives and I got the neck roast, the qtrs. and had a roast cooked when my husband got home from work. I couldn't eat any though that night...

I don't have a grinder, but I still cut up my own deer. Lost of good steaks, roast, and stew meat. I compost the remains, even whole road kill deer and never once had a dog or timber wolf or any animal dig it up. A foot of carbon over the top takes care of the smell. If I didn't compost, my garbage man takes anything I put in there, except once he didn't take a 4' tall metal post with a big chunk of cement around the base. Around my neck of the wood, there are many places to donate deer hides or trade them for gloves at a fur dealer.

That is things they ask us is if we can haul it and take care of it and even asked if we had a way of putting it down which we only had to do once. Around here if you was unable to get it, they will understand. Even though one time we weren't home Agent had two, I told him next time if its cool just put them by my Garage and he said he would.

As far as Hides I thought about the Leather or Cape. I'm thinking if anyone along the line makes any money it's a No No.

Lots of people just take them to the Processor. They will lose half the meat. We do our own have only lost one Rib Cage.

I dunno, around here any deadfall is snatched up real fast. Lots of gleaning and foraging of feral fruit trees and guerilla gardening--plots in clearings. Even found some bee boxes tucked in on timber land(stuff that has been logged and replanted and wont be touched for 30 years). "everyone" uh, hunts "coyote".

Whole different type of Logging there. Clear Cut replant. Here they either selective cut or Clear Cut but leave the Tops, mostly Oak. Let Natural Regrowth do what it does, if it's clear cut couple years can't walk through it.

Here is a place that was Clear Cut 10 years ago.

I may be wrong but most churches prefer to keep information about donations and requests confidential but at the very least, sharing it on a public forum is not a really great idea.
