I have a 50 lump of solidified fertilizer.

I am thinking about chipping off bits and dropping them in a bucket of water to make it usable, but I thought I would check here to see if there is an easier way. It got wet while we were cleaning out the garage, and now it is a rock.

Any ideas other than chip and soak?

Wait until spring, take to poorest spot in garden, or where you are going to plant something, place on plastic to catch chunks, apply hammer to chunk. Gather up pieces, shake plastic out at desired spot, clean and oil hammer to prevent rust.

Cows, I just might do that. If I am going to do a messy job it might as well be done where it can do some good.

Depending upon what it is made from, converting it to liquid may not work very well. Depending upon the sources, the nitrogen and potassium may be readily soluble but the phosphorus may not. That's usually slower to release unless it was made with triple superphosphate. So, best to break it back to something close to the original form.

What kind of fertilizer is it? Like Martin said, different types and blends react differently to moisture. Some types simply can be crushed back into shape. I used my big tractor to crush several bags of 12-51 that had been sitting and solidified on me. Worked well.

if you don't have a tractor driving over it with a car should work

Use a Tamper, and a concrete mix tub. I have them from other projects but I suppose a tub of some sort and just a pipe would do too?
