Will This Work As A Woodstove (Pic Attached)

This cabin is steel, was going to make a cooking stove out of it, with burners on the top, and the interior would be for a small propane tank. However, after looking at it, I'm wondering if it would make a good wood stove. The interior would fit a few 12-14 inch chunks, and I could cut a hole in the top for smoke pipe. I have a small packable wood stove that I bought from Cabelas a few years ago, and the metal is about the same grade. I'm sure that the heat would escape this thing pretty easy, but it would only be used on weekends throughout the fall and winter in the Upper Peninsula. What do you think? Thank you!

As long as the sides are 12 gauge and the sides are at least 10 gauge it should be fine. Just make sure to put a barrier behind it and use triple wall pipe at least at the exit.

I think you Yuppers are nuts.
Just nuts enough to make it work.
I am not sure it is worth doing though because you will not be happy with it until you do a lot of altering.
A Troll (Also a good bit nuts)

you would probably need to set it on some kind of fire proof pad.

The sheet metal is too thin.... It will warp badly!!!! If you must use it firebrick the inside of the bottom where the fire will be. As far as getting heat some type of blower with a "cabinet" around the "firebox" is needed usually with a minimum of 1" airspace.... Triple wall in not needed if you can find an insulation pack class A chimney system or if you have proper clearance to cumbustables. Are you planning on freestanding this in a barn or what is the application for what you are trying to make?

It looks to light weight to me----as already stated----Need some Thick metal. Cheap metal can work for a year or so then burn out---hopefully you realize this and get it out the house while everything is still standing!!

That's why I love this site... Little bit of humor (troll) and a whole lot of good advice. The metal is thin, but it "looked" perfect. It would be used in a 16x16 cabin, but I'm not desperate, just thinking away the winter blues, lol. I think I will just do I what I aimed to so and make it a little cooking stove. I'll refinish it and cut away some room on the top for a couple round burners I have from an old pop up camper, secure some plumbing down to a 5 gallon tank that will rest in the belly.

I think it will warp badly (large flat sheet metal areas) and it will burn through in almost the speed of light. not to menrtion the stink the paint will make for days as it burns off.

Yes, it will warp. Would need at least 6 latching handles to pull the door tight to prevent warp.
Notice the barrel stove kits have a cast iron door and smoke stack and aren't legal in homes. That might be a cheap way to have heat, but likely too big for a 16 by 16'. Maybe you could find a smaller barrel?
Look for a Trash Burner. Sort of a small, two hole cook stove. I see them around from time to time. I have one that has a water heater built into it. May use it in a cabin project, someday.

If you put a propane tank in it's "belly", you should remove the door. Otherwise, if the tank leaks, it'll buil up inside and you'll never know until you go to light it and it goes BOOM! Is this for outside? Curt

Work, Eh. Well, NO. Take a lot of work, fire brick and a grate. Door would need changed to work and needs a way to get air in so wood can burn. I can find old wood stoves everywhere here, good heavy metal, built to work, just thrown out. A lot better start than that....James
