Mountain lion in back yard and missing dog

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/watch-mo...h-missing-dog/ I love the advice at the end about waiving your arms and shouting if confronted with a mountain lion. They always like a show with their dinner.
It's only a matter of time until the mountain lion have enough population pressure to enter the sacred grounds of the liberal invincibles who voted for no lion hunts and eat one.

You've never been put in your place in the natural order until you have been looked over by a mountain lion calmly assessing whether you are tasty and easy to get. Unlike bears and such, they think about it before deciding, looking you up and down. Which is the purpose of screaming and whirling your arms around I suppose.
Like any species though, young mountain lions do not always exercise the most rational judgement.

That was us last year. Luckily my husband was able to wrestle my dog back. She was badly injured but is healed and only lost the site in her eye.

I like how they say it not normal for them to take dogs or humans.
I fear no animal. I have dominion over all of them.
My sister watched as two large German Shepherds killed and dragged off her dog that was tied up to his dog house. It was a Toy Pomeranian. If I had been there it never would have happened. A week later those dogs were back on our property heading for the chickens and I was heading with a hoe to the corn field. They started to threaten me I reacted too soon. When they saw my attitude they turned tail very fast. I should have stopped and started backing up like I was afraid of them. I would have killed at least one of them that way.

Nothing worse than the feeling you get when you realize that you are being stalked by a mountain lion.

I think in my case the two would be simultaneous.

Being aggressive, yelling, waving your harms, etc with the mountain lion may well help. I've run into them several times, despite the official government position that they do not exist here. I run into bears much more frequently. Coyotes regularly.

I take a very aggressive stance with other predators. I'm a predator too. I don't like them poaching in my territory.

A single dog is probably dinner. Especially if tied. We have a large pack of big livestock guardian herding dogs because they can negotiate terms and enforce them on predators that fail to respect our boundaries. I've watched our dogs kill local predators. They're fast. Then they eat their kill. No professional curtesy.

I raise livestock, work in the woods and fields and have kids. I don't want other predators close by. Be aggressive. Very aggressive.

A friend of mine was chased by a mountain lion once - he told me that he was taking a walk in the woods - along a path - then all of a sudden there is a mountain lion standing in the path up ahead - he said that he stopped - the mountain lion started running at him - he turned and started to run back down the path - as the lion started gaining on him - he slipped and fell down - got up just in time before the lion bounced on him - he kept running - and started gaining ground - but then he slipped again and fell - the lion almost got him - I said to him - holy mackeral if that happened to me I would have done a job in my pants - he said - what the heck you think I was slipping on -

I've never been stalked by a predator but...we have acquaintances who run an animal sanctuary complete with tigers. One day, our husbands left the barn where a very sturdy enclosure housed a 600# Siberian tiger named Zeus. That huge beast never made a sound as he slipped down from his "cave," a house within the enclosure, and leaped at the chainlink just a second after the men passed. My gasp was so loud that the guys turned to see what had caused it. Another time, the lady asked me to monitor a baby tiger while she ran to the house for meds. Zeus was in his cage about 20' away when I started feeling very uncomfortable and switched my attention to him rather than the sick baby. Yep, he was sizing me up as a tasty morsel, just as previously described. I've never gone back into that barn. I didn't cry when I learned that Zeus had died but they have other large cats. All well contained. I hope.

I second the idea of multiple guardian dogs. We have 3, wouldn't mind adding another couple.

I do wonder if the looking you over thing is actually at a point less dangerous. The times I've heard about attacks, the people have said it was sudden and theatening did not seen the cat coming.

Yeah that was nice.

Why do people have to drag political preferences into everything?

In this case, because politics are the main reason for the over abundance of lions in Cali?

Politics figured heavily into the no lion hunting or harrassment of lions laws there. Resulting in an excessive number of cats with no fear of or respect for, humans, prowling and hunting in urban areas, attacking people as well as pets and livestock.

Remember, you asked, so don't growl if you don't like the answer.

I was thinking the same thing,,BS!,,,my advice is carry a .22 pistol and travel in pairs,,that way if you encounter a mountain lion or bear you can shoot the other guy in the leg and run away
