Have Dickies gone downhill?

Got a new pair of Dickies duck carpenter jeans for Christmas and the fabric seemed a bit thinner than a pair I bought around 5 years ago. I put them on the scale and it appears they have lost 4 ounces. That is in addition to whatever I have worn off in that period...

Try Riggs by Wrangler. Best work pants I've ever owned and I've put mine through some serious abuse. There very affordable to the working man to.

We found Dickies to be the only brand that holds up to my husbands wear and tear so far. He drives log truck and is up and down the ladder, cuts brush from the load, pulls chains and is VERY hard on his clothes. I just bought him a pair of insulated bib overalls and a work jacket. We tried Wrangler but not the Rigg style...he swears by the Dickies so until he complains, I'll keep buying them.

Back in January they bought out Walls. Don't know how that is going to play out. I 've been buying walls coats and coveralls for 40 years now.

All my jeans are going downhill, but then, I've lost twenty pounds.
I still have smaller Wranglers in a drawer...never thought I'd ever get to use them again.

If you look on Dickies website you will see they make a few different duck carpenter jeans. Looks to me you have received a pair of the "new" style. If you look at the weights of them it is quite a few ounces lighter than the standard duck carpenter jeans. As WV Hillbilly said, "They are new and improved"

If you still want the old style they look to be still available on their website. I have been ordering from their website for a while now because the work pants I wear are no longer available in any stores that i can find. They all started carrying the "new and improved" junk...lol but i get the good ones from www.dickies.com

A lot of the manufacturers seem to be "lightening" their materials. I still like Carhartt work pants, especially the double front variety for working in brush and briers.

For my money though, it's hard to beat Pointer Brand. For some items they are higher in cost, but knowing that every piece of their clothing is made in the US means lots more to me than the few dollars difference.

Dickies are sold at Wal-Mart, I would suspect that is where they came from.

Does that make a difference?

Yes it does.

Walmart orders a specific thread count, that is less threads per square inch, from many fabric makers. It's cheaper. They wear out faster, and Walmart takes a long time to pay the supplier. Often the product is sold before Walmart pays for it. Sometimes the stuff is worn out before Walmart pays the bill.

It's Business.

I notice the quality of many brands of jeans is going downhill. Not made as well with thinner material.

I have not tried Duluth trading company yet, They are or were known in the past for well made long lasting gear , especially bags.

DH just recently bought some pants from Duluth trading company. The quality so far appears very good, and their return policy is great. They are very high waisted, so DH had to send back his first order to get a larger size, but they had great customer service.

We get Nick's Dickies from Kohl's, and no problems. <shrug>

Old ones were from Walmart, not sure where the new ones came from, but my guess is amazon. I've got some double knee Duluth Traders too, and they seem thinner than the old Dickie's as well, and I don't like the fit as much. But they are next in the "wear them out" rotation as they have the guarantee.

I got tired of jeans wearing out so quickly.

Tried three pairs of Carhart duck work jeans [not double front] and took them to mom to be shortened.

When I picked them up she stated that this was the first item she has seen w/ 'good thread' in a long time. She had to work to pull out the old hem.

They are wearing nicely too!

That should be the LAST place you buy jeans! That place is NOT completive, unless you play their "cash" game.

Two for one sales? Not if they only have one size/design in stock.

That's not been our experience with Kohl's. We've actually been pretty pleased with them. And yes, I am a careful shopper, and keep track of the discounts and such.

Kohl's does sell junk that is only one step better than Walmart crap. BUT you can walk into Kohls at anytime and return anything.

I once bought a pair of shoes from there and 6 months later they had worn out and I had to buy another pair. I went to the customer service desk and told them of my last pair only lasting 6 months and she had me take them off and she did an even swap with a new pair (that only lasted 6 months)...lol

Maybe Kohl's is hit-or-miss. Again, I've not had any problems. I am still wearing a pair of everyday work shoes (office) that I bought a year ago - and I am pretty hard on shoes.

I also have a pair of Skechers I bought there over a year ago, and they're holding up great.
