Cable/Internet

What type of TV cable/Internet is avaliable for off grid---air wise---to far to get wired cable internet?

I know the Internet is something I am So Hung On----LOL, Got to keep up with the world and All these forums and TV Cable is Something my Wife can not Live without----Or she thinks she can not. She is retired, I am simi-retired---we built a new on-grid home about 2 1/2 years ago---small(992sqft) but so Very Comfortable. We built this quickly to have a small place to live till we got the off-grid cabin built down by the lake. Now I want to build my Off-grid Cabin----Or I Think I Do-----Do not have the desire as bad as I did a few years ago. I got the Lumber ready, The Blocks, The shingles for the roof. I got the well down, the place for the Cabin level with grass growing, the lake edge straighten up, 3500 watts of solar panels ready, gas water heater, gas stove, wood cook stove, wood heater, gas back-up heater, some rustic furniture, the tenon tool to build log furniture----The boats are already at the waters edge----Good Fishing-----all the animals are already there----Hey I have been putting this together for some time. Now I spend Most every day there messing with the animals, garden etc, etc. At night we have the same routine-----set in front of the tv---in recliners side by side----both with lap tops in our lap----Comfortable!!

This is making me wonder If My Dream has changed----I still have the desire to "live off the Land" So you people tell me what is available through satellite that would have a fixed monthly bill----unlimited usage----where we can just switch homes----have to get up and poke the fire in the winter---but that is OK. Thanks

It will depend on the sun, and on how much you want to spend but off grid without cable or dsl, you will have the satellite option. i don't know of another option for a place that has no phone line. electicity isn't the problem since a modem and the satellite take up very little- i don't remember how much mine used but it was negligible for my 24 v , 1500 watt +/- system and the router if it doesn't come with the modem....

Satellite unlimited usage is an oxymoron. How far between this place and the other one? Is there line of sight?

The Cabin site is about 1/2 mile from the present home, but because of 2 heads of woods and some higher ground between the two----for sure no line of sight.

I did buy a card from Walmarts about 3 to 4 years ago that had unlimited internet for a reasonable fee that worked with my lap top, but they did away with that deal. I was wondering what is out there/available now?

There is another thread some where on HT about the same thing..........
But with a satellite one big problem is the bandwidth limitations .......
Unless you are a night owl when between like 1am and 5am there is no restrictions.
For us day time users that 1 to 5 am does not work well

May be somebody can jump in here and put a link to that other thread . . .???

On that other thread was / is some interesting comments (mostly negative) about satellite internet............

Don't get too bogged down and pass up your dream...........

Fire-Man

Have you tried Google to search for the card you bought from WM? Thinking someone might be selling something similar. Let us know.

Satellite internet suxx royally. My contract with Hughesnet gives a download of 250 mb daily. Their claimed speed is 1mbps. I have never gotten half that speed.

I think that satellite is a small step above a mobile hotspot, and way below every other option. At 80.00/monthly, it is no bargain.

I have Dish Network for tv and have been completely satisfies with the service. Well, almost completely satisfied. I would recommend them.

Those that sold 'unlimited use' soon found they were so favored by people that did indeed use the service with no limits, that it has pretty well faded away.

A cable or telephone wire costs a lot to link up, but then the service doesn't cost the company too much so those can still be unlimited.

Anything through the air or from satellite it costs a lot to send that beam of data through the air, and so they tend to put limits on it.

Can you get cellular data there? It has limits, but is an option. Probably what your Walmart card was right?

Is there a wireless provider in the area? They use antennas that look like BBQ grills, beam off of cell towers or tall elevators or water towers. The signal goes 10, maybe 15 miles. They are often more local of a company, so harder to find. Need to look for them.

An old tv tower at your new house up 40 or 50 feet might help catch something, or a repeater from your current cabin if that works in the future.

Satilite TV is easy, but unlimited Internet is difficult without a wire......

If you can have telephone in your current house, why can't you have telephone with DSL in your new house? It doesn't need electricity, but just the phone wire and a few watts from your solar panels to run the modem and router? Most phone cos are trying hard, offering phone, Internet and TV through their wire?

Curtis - DUMP Hughesnet and get exede. The old Hughesnet in particular is JUNK. They didn't even want their equipment back. I too topped out at about 600 with Hughesnet.

$50/mo for this.

That looks like a pretty good deal a shame I just recently signed another two years for my hot spot.

Excede (Wild Blue) was the first provider that I looked into. Their bandwith was maxed out in my area, and they were not taking new customers. After a couple of months of searching, Crapnet was my only option. I am stuck in my contract until next November, unless I want to pay the early termination penalty. I cannot even get Gen 4 here so upgrading isn't an option. American broadband (cell based) was promising until they did a site survey. I have high tension wires crossing the line of site between my house and the tower. No go.

Dsl would be an option, but I made the mistake of trusting my ex-roommate to handle the bills that were in my name, and now I owe the phone company $2700. Along with many others that I am paying down. In another year or two, I should be all caught up, and my options will be better.

If you have cell service I like ATTs hotspot. Works fine for this old fart. I don't know anything about speeds or any of that but it opens what I want when I want. I have use Verizon broadband it works great too.
