Burl Wood

The SO is a logger so he has the unique opportunity to pick up pieces of burl.
Hes never really given it much thought till he found a large piece.

Its water oak.
How exactly do you price burl and where should it be cut to display the grain without devaluing the piece?

It's often sold by the pound. I'd get it wrapped up tight in plastic or sealed at the ends with paint unless it is alreadty dried, to avoid cracking when it shrinks.

I wouldn't dream of pricing it, 'cause I don't know about the species. A good place to list it is on "woodplanet" they send out daily emails to a LOT of folks in the business and listings are free.....Joe

I've seen them " turned " into cylinders. They were beautiful but I don't know about pricing. I think I have seen them selling on ebay. Check there.

There appear to be more than a few wood turning organizations in GA. I would contact the the one(s) most local to you and ask their advice. It's a great burl but its size will limit it to someone with a large enough lathe to be able to handle it.

The only reason i said to wrap is that if the outside dries and shrinks before the inside (and it will, unwrapped) it may crack. Wrapping prevents rapid drying, and helps keep water content the same throughout the wood.

It's why the ends of lubmer often split while the middle does not, because the ends dry first and shrink, causing stress...Joe
