Old stove

This old stove was in one of the barns when I bought the place. I've search the internet with no luck and I can't find a name or anything on the stove itself. If I lift off the ornamental top, it looks like there's a little funnel for maybe a reservoir. Anyone familiar with one of these. I'm trying to attach the pics, hope it works.

Coal heater? Is all the light colored metal nickel? That top piece should be easy to distinguish. Would be very nice all cleaned up....James

No, that top portion is porcelain coated metal. I thought about cleaning it up if nothing else for ornamental uses.

You might contact these folks to see if they have an idea of what you have there:

Sure is a spiffy looking stove. Good luck restoring it!

They made wood, coal and oil heaters that looked like that. Open the door and see if it's got a grate or a burner....If I'se a betting man I'd bet it had a grate....ain't seen to many oil stove with cooking eyes! Some of them that size had a water resevoir...with a coil for using as a water heater. There are several old stove/heater catalog on the Internet Archive library. Wish I'd a found one of them myself when we bought our place!

Thanks so much for all the tips and links. It does have a grate inside, and I didn't notice it before but when I took pictures there is some sort of tag near the flue thimble on the stove that looks like writing....but I can't make out much if anything. Next chance I get I'll try cleaning that up for clues.

One way to find out what the writing says is to do a rubbing. You can take a piece of paper and put it over the top, and use a piece of lead pencil, dark colored chalk, or some other soft material and rub back and forth over the paper. The writing suddenly becomes distinct on your rubbing.

This is how people figure out the writing on old cemetery stones.

A long time ago, I restored a wood Parlor stove that had many pieces of Isen glass, square pieces of thin Mica, in each of the four doors. I was able to buy replacement pieces of these heat proof mineral. I got them from the Tarheel Mica Company, Plum tree, NC. Not sure if they are still in business.
Looks like your stove could use new mica in the door.

I have bought the mica glass for replacement after ... then.. our 3 year old grandsons..poked holes in our Kalamazoo parlor stove ...from our hardware. You can also buy this from the Lehmans brother amish catalog too. This stove looks a little bit like our Kalamazoo..1929 era stove. Heats like a champ and can take coal also. I would take the time to clean it up and use it..it's a real find..Good Luck..

OK, when I work up this morning (working nightworks) I went out and tried to clean off the writing as was suggested. I used some steel wool lightly and it worked pretty well. I took another picture after I cleaned it for those who tried to read the writing. I did some more searching and information is hard to come by but I was able to find a picture of one that someone was trying to sell at one time. At least now I know what it's supposed to look like. I think it's a cool looking stove and I want to try to make it actually functional. Anyway, mystery solved. Thanks again for the help and interest.

Cool! It's a Montgomery Ward Bengal! That gives you a lot to work with.

I wonder if there are any old catalogs out there that would have the piece in them.... hm...

Glad you have the puzzle pieces falling into place.
