Exclamation The beavers told me so!

I think this winter is going to be cold! I seen a beaver dam near me and I haven't seen the beavers make their homes so big in a good long time! I don't put much stock into weather forecasters or almanacs. But I do have all the faith in the world with the animal forecasts. I had a pig sweet girl who would tell me when we were going to have a cold snap or a storm. She was amazing. She always gave me 48 hrs notice. Cows, and goats fur are so thick. I'm so glad we have 20 cord of wood sitting here. I think we will need it.
We have already been colder then we normally are. Already had -19 eek! Thank God for wood heat, carharrts and wool socks!

I agree Myheaven. The winds have been just unrelenting making it seem much cold. The only good thing about the quick turn to cold has limited the number of lady
beetles in the house.

Having just watched "Narnia" and "Phil the Alien" this week, another person talking to beavers is getting weird.

The line in "Phil the Alien" where one of the leads says "I wasn't telling you everything either, I'm from Quebec!" had me rolling on the floor. Sometimes a man just has to be alone.

Normally we have 2 months of 90+ temps in the summer. This year we had 1 week yes 1 whole week of warm weather. Snow didn't go away till after may. Sure wish we had a little global warming!

The high the other day was 33, according to the weather we have not had that temp in November since 1976. They said that was a good indication we could have a cold winter. I had just told DH I thought we were because the squirrels have been working overtime hiding food. I have never seen the likes of lady bugs that we had this year...maybe that is another indication---they were all trying to get into the house

I agree with you about the animal forecasts!

I'm constantly collecting bits of animal/nature weather forecast wisdom, so I would love to know what your lil' piggie has to "say", and how she lets you know about the weather 48 hours ahead.

She would tear tree Limbs, gather leaves , break threw the fence to get ahold of the cows an goats hay, then build a huge nest. Scream until I gave her more food and bedding. She would eat and drink a whole lot more due to she wasn't going to leave her house for a few days. When I seen her pacinging and screaming I knew to get ready. She was a great pig. Oh I miss her!
Ever see a pig climb a white pine tree? I did.

lololol!!! She sounds special, f'sure. Part pig / part squirrel!

Is the foodie & super-nesting mode something that most pigs do before bad weather, or was that just something that was unique to that one?

It seemed special to her, we ate her off spring and sold them. So i dont know if any of her kids had that in them. She was a heritage breed and a great mom. Seeing a 500 lb pig climb up a tree was a shock. I still look at the trees she striped with great love. She also barked at anything out of the normal. She chased off a black bear the day after she had her litter.

Pics of that treeing-pig would be priceless... umm...i just gotta ask, what was she treeing, anyway? After reading about the bear, I won't be surprised if she treed a durned cougar, lol. What breed was she?

She was a mule foot. They don't get super huge like modern pigs. She climbed trees to get the higher branches. She had already tore off the bottom ones. She chased cats, coyotes, wolves, bears, neighbors dogs, possums, anything she didn't like. But she was totally ok with my kids sleeping with her. If I couldn't find a child I just had to go look at Abby and their they would be. Sound asleep. Lonelyfarmgirl has one of her boys. As sweet as he could be. You can sit on him rub his belly and will follow you like a lost puppy. Funny thing Abby always smelled of maple syrup. Bobby smells like it too.

Wow...just amazing. This causes me to rethink what I used to think about all pigs in general. Thanks for broadening my education!

A local guy put up a winter's worth of firewood. Concerned that it might not be enough, he asked a Native American elder about the upcoming winter, " Going to be a cold winter." The guy told all his friends. Everyone began adding to their wood pile. Again he asked the wise Native. "Very cold winter." was all he said. More wood was cut and split. Finally, he asked what kind of winter to expect. " Very, very cold." was the reply. He pressed for more information, " How do you know what the winter will be? The Native replied, " I see all the signs of a cold winter. White man have big wood pile."
