Hickory cane/hickory king/hickory kane ?
I have no idea! I've seen all these names thrown around and a half dozen different descriptions to go with each one! So here is what i'm interested in no matter what it is actually called.
One description is that it is a white heirloom corn that grows 14-16 feet stalks.7-9 kernel rows of kernels the size of your thumbnail,on ears 16-20 inches long.
I've searched here and on google and can't find a match for what I've been told. Does this sound like anything you know of or am I being fed info from 2-3 different varieties bunched into one?
Any help would be great. I'd like to just grow it once in the garden and find out what useful purposes it may have.Maybe making hominy or as an "in the field" late winter wildlife food etc. Any info please!
Thanks
Wade

"Hickory King" is an old variety of white kernal corn that was grown for making hominy.

I'm not sure if hickory king and hickory cane is the same corn or not. when I was a kid 60 years ago LOL my grandpa raised hickory cane. it made huge tall sturdy stalks and had big ears. the corn kernals were bigger than most corn and had eight rows of kernals on each cob. sometimes there would be more than that but he only saved his seed from the eight row ones, we used it to grind into corn meal and for hominy I don't remember him feeding it to the livestock but I'm guessing he did because I don't remember him raising any other kind of corn. we also ate it before it got hard just like sweet corn. it was an all around good corn

As far as I can tell they are all the same. It seems what you call it depends on where you are from. I think the correct name is Hickory King and Cane or Kane are colloquial names. As for the number of kernel rows. You will never have an ear of corn with seven or nine rows because the rows are always in pairs. You will always have an even number of rows. I've grown white Hickory King and it usually had eight rows and sometimes ten or twelve. It's still Hickory King if it has more than eight rows. It just seems most people keep only the eight rowed ears for seed. The eight rowed ears have the largest kernels. I only kept the eight rowed ears for seed. I think to say the ears are 16-20 inches long is not correct. Most of my ears were 10-12 inches, some more and some less. The stalks do get very tall. Mine were usually about 10-12 feet with some going about 15 feet. It is usually white but there are some yellow strains and I think someone has crossed it to also get light blue or pink. It makes really good cornbread and grits. That is what I used it for. I don't grow it anymore because it is a little late for my area. It is a 120 day corn. I prefer an earlier yellow corn. I think it is a good corn for the regions that need a late corn but I don't think it tastes any better than any other OP corn I've grown. The seed is usually easy to find on the internet.

Hickory King is a fine corn. We grow the white as it makes fine cornmeal too. 10-12 ft tall here.
Picked early enough, it makes a fine cob corn and freezes well.
Seed pulled and saved for another season ... but there is more out there yet so may be able to help with a start
Definitely a mainstay here.

That's a generous offer ! I would certainly love to try it. I'm very curious about the yellow hickory king also. I'm not convinced it is a true hickory king. I have found it in the seed catalogs and it is advertised to be the long ear type so I'm thinking I have been told wrong by people that have gotten them mixed up. I may try some of the yellow also but for sure want to get a good start of the white.I'm very anxious to make hominy and everything I have read is that white hickory king is the best fot that.

I grew Hickory king white dent for several years. Got the original seed from the hardware store in Sutton, WV. They generally had it every year, but I never needed to buy it again. It makes wonderful cornbread and grits, and is traditional for corn whiskey. It always did well for me, though I did have it lodge in spots on occasion. It's tall.

It gets deep but I actually knew Popcorn Sutton and his "friends" ... The mountains tend to be a reclusive group of close knit friends. Recipes allowed = these
Just saying ... and all that I'm saying

Well, now I am going to go ahead and order some. We (that would read, "Nick") just finished plowing the corn field, and we're just about done shelling our Reid Dent corn, so we have corn on the brain.
I like the versatility of the Hickory King. Everything from green corn eating to feeding the goats. Ah, it's time to start planning the garden for next year.

Hickory cane/hickory king/hickory kane ?
It is illegal to own a still, though allowances are made for small stills 1gallon and under to make essential oils and such, and it is illegal to distill one drop of alcohol. Only New Zealand allows it.

Americans
Tough out of luck - see the http://www.ttb.gov/ Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, their FAQ page, and some of the latest ammended laws. You will find ....
Spirits
You cannot produce spirits for beverage purposes without paying taxes and without prior approval of paperwork to operate a distilled spirits plant. [See 26 U.S.C. 5601 & 5602 for some of the criminal penalties.] There are numerous requirements that must be met that make it impractical to produce spirits for personal or beverage use. Some of these requirements are paying special tax, filing an extensive application, filing a bond, providing adequate equipment to measure spirits, providing suitable tanks and pipelines, providing a separate building (other than a dwelling) and maintaining detailed records, and filing reports. All of these requirements are listed in 27 CFR Part 19.
Ray emailed the BATF for the reference statutes concerning home distillation. Here is their response:
Ray, you have not been able to locate anything on home production because there is no provision for it. Moonshining is still illegal!! Unlike wine or beer, the laws and regulations governing distilled spirits contain no provision that would allow someone to produce spirits in their home for personal use. Under 26 U.S.C. Section 5171 operations as a distiller, warehouseman or processor may be conducted only on the bonded premises of a qualified distilled spirits plant. To qualify such a plant, a registration, application for permit and bond must be filed in addition to other supporting organizational documents. 26 U.S.C. 5178 places restrictions on where a plant can be located. Hope this answers your question.

You could be right. I do know pres Carter signed it into law that you can produce up to 200 gal per year for personal consumption. I also know I have sat with a still operator and a deputy in the brewhouse sharing a jar of fresh squeez'n's.I guess it's only illegal if someone turns you in! LOL
