Need ideas for homemade gifts for my husband..

Looking for some ideas for homemade gifts for my husband. He has a birthday in December in addition to Christmas. So far I 'm going to sew him some pajama pants and make him a fishing rod holder to organize all his rods in the shed. Any other ideas that would be fairly easy but would also get used. Hate to give him things that aren't useful as he is a very practical fellow.

What skills or crafts do you do? Obviously sewing!

My dad asked for some RealTree camo handkerchiefs a few years back, they sell material with that print at (my local) Joann's. If he's a hunter, that might be something.

One thing to remember is men are very simple critters. . . As a husband I can tell you some of the best and most memorable gifts the wife has given me can't be discussed easily in a family forum.

Does he use flies to fish? Those are fun to make. I bought a folding knife kit for my DGS to put together for his father. I did that with my son back when he was 10 too. Does he need an emergency bag for his vehicle? Somewhere to dry his boots or gloves when he comes in the house? My kids were always losing their gloves. We were in Alaska 25 years and went through 5 pair per kid per year! There are simple patterns for fleece mittens or gloves, or leather with fur inside.
This year's home-mades here are new PJ's and pillow cases for all the grandkids, lotion, lip gloss and jewelry for DIL, shirts for DS.
Good luck finding time when he's not watching, and have a good time making things. Home-made really is nice.

Sewing isn't really one of my skills, lol. bought the sewing machine and fabric 5 years ago to make him pajama pants. Decided to make a pair for myself before I cut down the pattern. Then realized that I don't really like sewing. Going to try it again this year because things are tighter than normal. First year with only one income. Hand tied flies are out. He uses spinning rods and lures . Thanks for the ideas.

It doesn't have to be something you made for him, it could be something you do for him. Like, clean and restore the leather of his boots. Saddle soap or polish or whatever the appropriate treatment is for that kind/condition of leather. My husband hates to do stuff like that but I like working on leather.

Detail his car/truck. My husband doesn't have the patience to really clean the interior, but he sure likes it when it's clean. 3M makes a marine vinyl cleaner/restorer you can get at WalMart that is wonderful for auto interiors. Q-tips dipped in window cleaner will get the dust out of nooks and crannies. Make it look new again and I bet he would love it.

The way to a man's heart is thru his stomach (yeah, yeah, I know the shortcut but this is a family forum). Make all his favorites for dinner and dessert, plus a stash of his favorite treats.

A lot of men aren't the best at organizing. If he is always looking for a tool or can of WD40 or whatever, maybe he could use some help organizing his garage/shop. Tread VERY carefully with that, though. Some men would appreciate it and some would take offense and never forgive you.

Hints on sleeping pants. Cut the pattern a bit big. At our house the guys want thing loose when they sleep Also, I buy flannel sheets, cheap, at Goodwill and such. I use those to make sleep pants and nightgowns....usually about $3 a sheet.

Got any old spoons in the kitchen? You could make him some handmade spoon plugs to fish with.

Yep, make him a gallon bag full of homemade beef jerky! Of coarse that requires money to buy the Hamburger. Or if he's lucky enough to kill a deer you can make venison jerky for him.

My wife once gave me a homemade coupon book that she dreamed up and it was filled with all kinds of little suggestions from eating out, catch a movie, free fishing day, to naughty, naughty bedroom stuff. It was quite exciting to use throughout the year.

How about a lap quilt you could use camo flannel. Since we keep the heat low its nice to sit and watch a little tv or read with a quilt on you for warmth.

Well, if he's a hunter, you might buy him a couple boxes of Ammo, for one or the other of his favorite hunting guns. Or, if he carries, you might buy him a couple boxes of "Practice Ammo" of the right caliber for one of his favorite "carry guns".
Be sure it matches whatever Ammo, he keeps on hand, though.

It depends on how much sewing you're up for, but a rag quilt is not difficult at all. You leave raw edges showing, clip them, wash and dry the quilt and it gives a nice rag/chenille effect. If you google "rag quilt instructions", there's lots of help online.

Thanks everybody! I've since thought of a few other ideas. Going to make some saw horses and a boot brush for the front porch. Also going to give him a bunch of unused cloth diapers and call them shop rags. He has no clue what they are anyway. He is getting a few new things but that should round it out nicely.

I put zip lock baggies around each fishing reel and zip lock them shut-keeps everything together and keeps dust out after cleaning-you could easly made the same out of some fabric and fasiners.
