Acv

I usually buy Bragg's ACV but it's getting expensive. I get regular apple cider from an orchard in PA. I was wondering if I could somehow turn that into vinegar. I have a little "mother" left from my last bottle of Braggs. Can I dump that in? Or do I have to do more? Also, this apple cider I have is not pasturized, if that matters

Yankee, I'm in the process of making my own acv from apple peels/cores that were the scraps of making apple butter. I'm about 6 weeks into it and it is already the best acv I've ever seen. Got the instructions from BWH mag. current issue. As for the cider question... dunno

I just let apple juice go to cider, then hard cider, then add the mother and it makes vinegar all by itself....James

A c v

Dr Oz was talking about the benefits of ACV. The thing that surprised me, was, he showed an off brand of ACV not Braggs. Also, he made no mention of a Mother being in ACV.

The "mother" (bacteria) is in all acv until it's pasturized. (sp)

Homemade ACV is the best, and very easy to make.

I am currently making ACV, but then what how do I store it for a year until next apple season?

Thanks for all the help. Does it matter that the cider I bought is not hard? Do I simply set it in a dark room until it turns hard? Then what?

Karenp, you can water bath it in quart jars with non metal lids (tatler are good) for 15 minutes.

Fishhead, thanks for the help with the link, mine didn't do it.

My ACV is generally a batch of apple wine that didn't stay away from bad influences during its formative months or the least expensive store brands. Both correct my occasional urinary tract infections or stone within 72 to 96 hours but the cider wine turned ACV tends to work faster at breaking the stones down. I guess it may be a bit more acidic than store bought acv.

So there is no easy or back door way of making acv? My super awesome plan to dump the mother from my Bragg's into local made, unpasturized (soft) cider is pie in the sky? I'm new to homesteading and I know so little.

It seems like it's getting hard now. Do I just dump in mother now? Will it stop being "hard"? OR do I have to do something else?
