Solved a wood smoke/open window problem

Having an open window while sleeping is a much desired thing for me. But where I live, wood smoke for various wood stoves in the area causes a problem.
So if I open the window at night and if there is a strong smell of smoke, I close it for the night.
But I found a product that is a HEPA filter window screen insert- Safeguard Widow Screen Filter. It fits in a double hung window and has worked wonderfully. Fresh air and no smoke.
Just in case anyone else has the problem.

WIWT, that is so cool! Love the problem solver in you! We do burn a wood stove as our primary source of heat, funny thing, is that our stove pipe comes out on the same side as our upper bedroom window. Not really that funny. Anyhow, I LOVE that instead of complaining about it you found a positive fix. Thanks for the great info.

Sounds like it might be good during allergy season too.

This what it was designed for. I decided to try it for the smoke issues. Neither of my neighbors that are "upwind" of me cure their wood before burning and have old stoves so they product a lot of amoke.

This morning I went out to feed and was surprised by the amount of smoke in the air. Even though I have the window open with its screen, it did not smell in the house at all.

My only question is how long til the filter clogs up. Since I just started using it , and it was not designed for that environment, I have no idea.
Patchouli likes this.

HEPA is for particulates ONLY. In a case such as yours such a filter could stop the smell but still allow carbon monoxide in!

Tinknal, I suppose you're envisioning billows of smoke rolling through, and all the while we're snoring away obliviously..... NO! haha I close the window and allow for the suction to reduce or a change of wind. Thanks for the heads up though. Been aburnin a wood stove since I was a wee one. I did, however, like the filter idea.

Sadly, like may other brilliant ideas, there is a fly in the ointment. Turns out that in a breeze, and not much of one, there are plenty of leaks around the screen.
It's better than nothing but nowhere a great as I was hoping.
I'll think on it further.................
