door knob

there is a door in my house that has one of those knobs with a turny thing, the other side does have a key hole but we do not have the key. i would like the turn button (abiltiy to lock) on the other side of the door. can i just take the knob off and turn it around or would this be a right/left sided knob?

It should be reversible I think. One way to find out - try it!

Is it old?
Skeleton keys can be had at many hardware stores, and they do work (we once had a 1917 house with original hardware, and we were able to use skeleton keys for all the interior locks).

no, sadly its not that old. its just a plain old brassy knob, the cheap kind from any home store. just locking on the wrong side. thanks, i'll go take it apart and see what happens!

If the key hole is just a hole in the center, a small screwdriver will substitute as a key.

As a kid we had fun with those. Just about anything you can poke in the hole will unlock the door.

...............Normally , there are only 2 screws that keep both halves of the lock together , remove those screws and take it with you to lowes or HD and buy a replacement ! You should be able to buy an exact replacement . , fordy

Remove the two screws from the side with the turny thing, switch sides with the two pieces and put the screws back in.

On alot of door knobs you have to not only reverse the knobs but also take the latch part out and rotate that part. Some of them you dont have to do that extra step but most all modern door knobs are reversible except the lever types.

Door knob

When you reverse the knob be sure to check the function of the lock with the door open. You don't want to lock yourself in the closet. LOL.
