What age did you move to the country?

We finally got our place built and we are leaving the city at age 59. Here is a story of our new experience so far near a small town in Central Texas.

We were 55, but age doesn't really matter if your health is reasonably good. We've got a 76 year old neighbor who cut & split 6 cords of wood for us last year.

Think I was 2 or 3 days old. Don't remember, and knowing dates and ages was not on my list of priorities.

A few days old. However long it was before my mother and I were sent home from the hospital. My first pair of overalls were a onesy from what my parents told me.

The first time???? I was three days old, was the third child so my mother was in no hurry to get out of the hospital with me. When I arrived to the old home place, it looked very much like it does today... A low ceiling single story three room log house sitting in the middle of endless flat fields for miles in each direction... one cottonwood tree out front between the irrigation ditch and the dusty road. This photo was taken last winter, the old cottonwood has grown a bit over 62 years, and of course when I first arrived it was summer, not as much snow, more dust. I am pretty sure thats a different dog too, similar to the we had back then but it wasnt black.

I went from the hospital straight to the farm.. then off and on through the years in and out of the country and city...

Now I'm moving back to the country for good at 50... my wife a couple years older, but she won't admit that

I was a late bloomer, lol, though I dreamed of it all my life. I just couldn't talk either husband into it. I was 52 before I finally got here, on my own. It will be 6 years in December.

I had health issues when I started and have developed more since then, but I still keep at it, it's just taking me longer to get everything done that I want to, but I can't even imagine going back to the city ever again!

You just have to find ways to work smarter, not harder, and I think that's good advice for anyone really, especially if you plan to still be on your spread when you grow old.

Looks like a nice blog. Good luck!

I first lived in the country when I was in my early 20's, moved to the city at 27, and moved back to the country at 58.

I've lived in the country my whole life except for three years when Hubby and I bought our first house. Those three years in town were horrible. A girl can't go out to the clothesline in her underwear when there are neighbors all around.

Dixie, how do your kids like it?
Do they miss 'the city'?

I've been back and forth my whole life as well. Did the usual 'flee the small town' when I went to college and lived in big cities until my mid-20's when I discovered all the people made me claustrophobic! Went back to Maine and met my now husband. The more recent back and forth's were for grad school and work. We are in our late 40's, DH is now able to stay at home and farm/homestead, I'm hoping to go part time in 5 years, "retire" in 10 if possible.

It was my 60th birthday present to myself and single - 5 acres of land, no house. Moved just so I didn't have to board my horses anymore. Who knew it would be the start of this homesteading journey.

Well, I'm still trying.

We are under contract on a small place on 5 acres so if all goes well, I will be in my early 40's when I finally get to move to the "country". Can't come soon enough.

Hopefully the kids will adjust without too many issues.
