I feel dumb!

Been living here a year. I dont use the tractor much but have been through about 30gal of diesel already. Been noticing everyone fills their cans up at exxon even though bp is a few cents cheaper. Finally got curious and went to exxon, one of the pumps is "dyed" off road and is 50c cheaper!!

Well thats 15$ down the tubes but at least i cought it before it was more!!!
My old theory when everyone else is doing something (in this case using exxon to fill yellow can) there ismprobably a good reason!

Yep, and have you noticed whenever you buy a big ticket item within days someone will tell you about their brother-in-law who could have saved you 20%?

Just don't ever, ever get caught burning that dyed diesel in your pick-up truck! The minute a vehicle goes onto a public highway, even if it's your tractor, you are expected to be paying for fully taxed road fuel. Now, that's a School of Hard Knocks lesson I'd rather learn in the classroom than in the real world!

You're smarter than some folks I've known. More than a few have put gasoline in a diesel tank.

Just think of it as donating your "extra" money to the government. It might just help pay down our national debt.....HAHAHAHAHAHA

A non-road vehicle can travel down the road with the dyed fuel. A tractor, combine, lawn mower, etc from job to job as its primary deal is not transportation, but some sort of off road work.

But you are correct, in a licensed vehicle it is a big fine to use the dyed diesel.

For those unaware, there is a big fuel tax on fuels sold in the USA, both state and fedral. You can request a refund for gasoline you use in tractors and the like. They sell diesel fuel with a red dye in it, that does not have the tax assessed to it. Generally it is the same diesel fuel dyed or I dyed, only difference is the taxes added in.

A friend of mine works at a dealership. A couple months ago, they were prepping a brand new diesel truck for pick up. One of the not to bright service technicians filled this clearly marked diesel drinker with gasoline. Luckily they caught the mistake before they started it.

They drained the tank and my friend was given the slightly diesel tainted gasoline for his own truck. Thirty plus gallons of it.

and that dye stays in the system for a long time, so even if you jsut burn a little bit for 'today', it'll show up dyed for much longer.

Weird, I have never even heard of dyed fuel, thats strange. It would be easier to tell diesel from gas I suppose. Who goes around wasting time checking to make sure you have the right fuel in your car?

Me. When you have a dozen engines running diesel, ORD, or gas and a half dozen different people filling fuel cans, you check to make sure you have the right fuel. A 5 second check is a lot faster and cheaper than a repair bill.

That would be the law enforcement folks working for the Dept. of Transportation. They do the road side checks on trucks too and check what's in the tanks when they do.

wait... we are thinking bout buying a diesel F350. You mean that there are people who will just stop you on the road and look in your tank for no other reason than they want to check for dyed fuel?

I have been told they will check tanks at sale barns to check for dyed diesel in truck tanks. When you run that fuel in your on-road vehicles it is tax evasion, in Texas it is required you acquire a dyed diesel permit to even purchase the stuff whether you run it in a tractor or a back hoe.

Don't know if it still is true, but at one time the fine was $1,000 per gallon of tank capacity for running dyed diesel in a road vehicle.

And, FWIW, when diesel vehicles first became popular, the road diesel was dyed, the off road diesel was not dyed. Made for some interesting times if you were checked.
