Stringline used by masons. Once you set the corner blocks you use the stringline to keep all others in line.

As mentioned the two wood pieces hook over the corner blocks.

Well what did the ones you used look like? I have never seen anything other than these(other than plastic ones that look like them) for block/brick laying. They do have things that attach to the string that you would use in the middle of a long run, BUT I have not been looking----might be something New out there. These are called line blocks. here is a link.

I have wooden ones in my toolbox, not plastic, but they are older......

We were laying cement blocks. We laid up the corners first. Then we each took two pieces of 1/2 inch plywood that were about 1 1/4 X 10 inches and grove a #6cc nail near one end and a second one about 8 1/2 inches towards the other end. Neither one was driven down all the way.
Lay it across a block and twist it then tie mason's line to the outside nail head. Slide it down to the board. One on each end and there ya go.
Certainly ain't fancy or store bought but thousands of blocks were laid with them there pieces of scrap wood.
