making fence taller

hubs made a nice sized area for the bucks last year, but i thought it seemed too short of fencing. well, sadly i was right and my goat is wandering the yard often. he's not really hard on the fence, but with it being so short, of course he's gonna jump out!~

what do you think of this idea??

he doesnt jump out of cattle panels, but buying that many would be too much $$. i know there are tpost extenders but they are about as much as the cattle panels. i have wood posts and tposts, every other.... woven wire between barbed, which is on top and bottom. my current fence is maybe 5ft at most. need another foot. i really don't think he's going to try it, if its too tall, he'll just live with it.

so thinking the pipe and chicken wire or garden wire that comes in a 2ft tall roll. will it work??

You will need to be sure the goat won't clear an extra foot and then extend at least 2 feet in height or double whatever you think the goat can clear because otherwise the fence raising will only be a training exercise like raising the bar for a high jumper in training.

Preferably the extension should leaning inward at a 15 degree or so angle to further deter attempts jumping the fence height extension.

Make him afraid of the fence by running an electric fence around the inside and tricking him into getting shocked a few times.

I'd go 18 inches more. I like the PVC idea!

PVC gets brittle when exposed to the Sun.

I think PVC will snap easy. Maybe 1/2 of the extensions can be steel, and 1/2 PVC?

It will take years for the PVC to get brittle.

If you paint the PVC it will last longer or use gray schedule 80 and paint it to get the maximum lifespan.

Not all paint will stick to PVC so you need a primer made for that purpose, then paint. Be careful when buying a primer, sometimes they are inexperienced challenged.

Stop in your local muffler shop and see if you can buy the drops (cut off pieces to short) they will probably give them to you for the asking.

Oh darn, I thought this thread was going to be about extending the height of wooden fence posts. Anyone have ideas for doing that without making it look like a hack-job?

That's what I'm going to do. I googled and YT'd for ideas to make my chicken yard fence taller (currently using t-posts)...finally decided enough was enough so I'll just re-build it using wood posts.

google fence extentions, you can add onto wood fences pretty easy it looks like.

i also wondered, some of those L shaped metal shelving brackets, super cheap and already have holes in them, i could screw to wooden posts and have it angled. I'd probably open them up a bit, but i think those might work easier than the pvc. that muffler end idea is great too, but i have alot of posts!

the other idea is to get a nigi buck!! then i could have cute little mini saanens, higher butterfat for butter and cheese!

Pull the posts one at a time and replace with taller posts. I've seen 10' tall t-posts.

You might also google "goat yoke" I have seen goats wearing them 50 years ago, and contained within some pretty sketchy fences, no problemo....Joe

Bonus......You can look old billy in the eye and say "the yoke's on YOU!"....couldn't help myself, sorry....Joe
