Carrots, kohlrabi, and spinach

This is my first post!

Any tips on growing these three things? My garden area is new this year and there is lots of competition with grass and weed. Our soil is a redish sandy loam that is more to the sandy side. It seems that I have a few carrots come up but not near as many as I planted. Any tips would be pretty cool...

Welcome!

The Gardening and Plant Propagation Forum here will have all the answers you need.

Some vegies grow better in cooler weather rather than the heat of the summer.
Where I live, I found I also had to water more than I realized with my first garden.
Are you starting from seed in the garden? I have a short growing season so start my vegies inside, then harden off & plant after the last frost.

Lots of reasons for a poor garden. Get a notebook & keep track of the weather, types of plants, rotation, etc. You'll learn.
You can also call your local co-operative extention service.

BTW: if you put your general location in the upper right, it will help give others who answer your post a better idea of how to answer - growing things in Alaska is quite different than Florida.

carrots need to be kept continuously moist to germinate well. The only way I can do that is to plant them; cover lightly; water well and cover the row with boards. After 10-14 days I uncover them and see how germination is going. If they are up, I leave them uncovered, water well and keep watering -if the new sprouts get too much sun, they will wilt from being under the boards. I keep weeds at bay by planting them in a trench of potting soil.

Kohlrabi- I start the plants inside and transplant. They are cool weather, so I do them in spring and fall.

spinach is a cool-weather crop also. Plant it very early. I can overwinter it here with a pile of snow, but prefer it in the hoop house under frost fabric. I planted my fall crop this week and will have spinach through the winter.
