Farm Map ?

When you do things like run water, power, drainage lines, do you map and photo the locations ?

I didn't initially, but as the years have gone by and memory fades, or landscapes change, we ( mainly she... ) decided a map was in order.

Right now, it runs to 5 pages with couple more of photos. The pages are on large, poster type paper, about 24" x 18". Nothing pretty or professional about the drawings ( more of a sketch ), but at least it might jog the memory if required.

A very good idea. One I have also done. More in case something happens to me so others will know where things are. Doubly important since we are off grid and all power and water lines were run by myself.

I do maps with measurements, pictures with measurements listed, in a 3 ring binder. I run the tape, underground, with the foil, easy to follow with a metal detector. I have too many properties to remember them all. Each renter gets a copy too....James

This is a wonderful idea.

Even semi-city folks could use an idea such as this.

I have pictures of trenches. When I found the clean out for the septic I measured the distance from the house foundation and spray painted that number on the foundation (doesn't show, I went low). Can't lose that!

Thanks for a great idea.. As I find the stuff on our property I'm going to start doing the same thing.. As it stands, I have no idea where anything is.. I've got ideas, but I'm still fearing cutting something at this point..

I have two septic tanks in the front yard with a total of three service holes.
My sweet wife knows where the floor joist is down in her laundry room with the drawing and measurements from the two front basement corners to the center of each hole. Plus I write on that floor joist every time it has been pumped out.
To located the buried phone and CATV wires I just call Miss-Dig.

Dang I bet the next man is going to pay out the rear for that map, especially if X marks the spot for the Gold.

YES! We do this. Also, make a list of service people to call and phone numbers for every utility and plumber and electrician, etc. Keep that in the same notebook with the maps.

We moved to a ranch once that had a detailed map like this.
Thirty thousand acres, it showed where all the water lines ran, where power lines ran, where fencelines and gates were, water tanks, houses (and their utility runs, leach fields, etc.), lakes, marshes, hay meadows and any drainage pump lines, and so on and so forth.

It was SOOO handy!

The gold is spent...right out there in the open to see...ahahahaaa.

Told my wife if I go first, and she sells the place, the MAP is $5,000 extra.

And if they don't buy it then, when they show up in a couple years for it, double the price.
