Found a bird

In my front yard we found a cockatiel. It is clearly somebody's pet but we don't know whos. We have asked the neighbors to no avial. It has a band on it's left leg. Any idea as to how to find the owners?

i found a parakeet in my cat's mouth last year. little sucker bit me when i rescued it from the cat.

i put an ad in the paper and found the owner. It was an old couple who were so happy to get their pet back.

you can try animal control too. they might have someone who is willing to take found birds until the owners show up.

Hi Torch,

The band would most likely be a breeders band, and would be usless to trace the owner. Your best bet is an ad in the paper, with as little information as possible as to description. Let the people who call describe it to you.

check with the local vet and see if there is a pet registry for your area. Our vet will tatoo an ID mark on a pet then keep a record of each ID and who the owner is so if a pet gets lost she will have a record of who it belong to. Even if they don't have a registry they might recognize the bird if they had ever treated it.

Changed my mind. All the kids love this bird. No longer looking for the owner.

Seriously, we've put signs up in the area hoping that nobody will claim it. Very friendly bird, clearly very used to being around people.

Say, Meg, what is the purpose of a breeder's band anyway? Just to ID one bird among many? If so is it likely that this bird is not a pet and just a breeder? fwiw, the band is metal, red and has a number on it.

Tiels are great birds, I used to handfeed them for my mother who raised birds to sell. If this was someone's pet, and it sounds like it was, it may even talk once it calms down and gets used to things. The sound of a Tiel talking with its high, squeaky voice, is hilarious! Mainly though, they carry a tune quite well and you can teach them to whistle just about anything.

Update:

We found the owners. They saw one of our signs and called. They were so thankful that we had taken care of their bird. A happy reunion for them, a sad goodbye for my kids.

Now I have to buy a bird!

My parents have one, they have had that breed for quite a few years. he got attached to my dad. My mom can't so much as change hs water without getting hissed at. Never bit, though. Mom wouldn't put up with that. Bird gets up in the morning, asks for his coffee, and thats when you have to feed him. He makes a mess(food) on the floor, too...I guess most birds do that? he got loose once, no I think twice...but parents said it was b/c they didn't have his wings clipped when they should have. Overall sems to be a loving healthy bird.
