Feed savings

A friend told us that he buys his feed in the winter while prices are low then picks it up through out the year has he needs it.He buys two tons at a time.

We don't buy that much feed but those of you who do maybe this idea will work out for you.

As long as there's a cool place to store it, I don't see a problem. Otherwise, with the heat you're risking losing lots of nutrients.

Fin29 the feed stays at CO-OP till he gets ready for it.He picks it up as he needs it.

OuV i'm not sure about the prices.We buy a 50# bag of layer pellets ever so often.

Why would the prices be lower in the winter time? It don't happen up here.

Because farmers who cant afford to wait sell it then, right before people finish their crops is the most expensive. He's probably paying a little extra for them to store it, or he has connections. Otherwise they would make you take it within the first little bit for the same amount of money.

grain prices tend to get a bit lower in the fall, during harvest, if things are going well. Of course if harvest isn't going well, prices go up. look what happened with beans this year. the prices for bulk ingredients change daily, pre-mixed feed is not quite that volatile, but can change as the ingredients do.

there is really no predicting what feed prices will be at any given time of the year. if we could all do that reliably...us farmers would be rich, right?

i have to buy my poultry base 2 tons at a time, but they don't keep it for me. i have to pick it all up and i store it in a shed, in a grain truck (it is bagged). i have soybean meal delivered in bulk...2-4 tons at a time. i pay whatever the price is for the day.

my feed store offers a contract deal on some things like cattle tubs (I don't use them). you agree to buy so many through the winter and they will order them as you need them. they save by pre-ordering so many and just pass that along to the buyers.

I used to prepay for feed when I had stock and that lazt hired hand,It worked out great for me and for the feed store both as he had several hundred extra dollars to spend on feed ,and we would get a few bags at a time. Just make sure of the price first and you need to trust your feed store. I went to this plan because the hand would call the people I ran for and tell them I needed to send him money for feed and he never bought it. He spent the money on every thing else .
