A/C Options in a Mobile Home

The roof has to be replaced, no alternative, due to old age & a leaky swamp cooler.

Its a mobile.

Im not putting a swamp cooler on the roof again.
Im looking for ideas/what others in mobiles do for A/C without running a swamp cooler on the roof.

Im thinking a swamp cooler run through a window, &/or possibly central air. Im just dont know if central air is possible or financially feasible in a mobile, its be interesting to hear if it is, or if anyone's doing it.

Ideas & input appreciated,
Thanks

Central air is the way to go if you can swing it.
Depending on size, you would most likely need two window units.

I know there are portable swamp coolers. I can post a picture of one if you want.

...................If , you decide on central air and heat , choose gas heat , either natural gas or propane ! Electricial Heat strips for heating during winter consume , LOTS of electricity and will cause you to get a very large bill . , fordy

Singlewide 14x70, I have a portable swamp cooler that I got last summer for a couple hundred bucks. It keeps the LR and kitchen cool. Uses about 5 gallons on a really hot day.

This summer I got a smaller one for the bedroom. It has a timer I can run for a few hours at night. It keeps the room cooler until the evening finally gets cool enough outside that my window fan can then catch up.

I got both of mine here: www.air-n-water.com

ETA: I've lived in a trailer house with a roofmount swamp cooler. Portables do NOT work as well, unless you get a massively oversized one...

What do you have for heat now. If furnace you can add a heat pump, not cheap. They make small heat/cooling systems like this....James

We are in Southern Nevada. Hot hot hot but low humidity except for mostly August.

We have a 20x50 and use all electric. We have two window units that both heat and cool, but only run one of them at any given time except for once in a while when it hits 115F. Then I will run both but only for about 2 hours.

We love them. I won't use a swamp cooler ever again unless it's an emergency as one of the reasons I live in the desert is I just can't handle humidity. We do use one for the barn though, the chickens haven't complained yet!

I have 2 window units. One usually does the job but when it's over 100 I run both. They are the 5000 BTU units that are often on sale for $100. They each pull about 600 watts so both together use less than the 1500 watt heater I sometimes use in the winter to supplement the wood heat. My electric bill for them is about $40 a month. I can't stand the heat and humidity so it's well worth it. It's too humid for a swamp cooler to work well here.

And here is how I used it. LOL
This was to keep my Great Pry cool. You can see how he like it.
This was at a horse boarding stable in Tempe.

And here is how I cooled my little apartment down (Part of that same barn LOL )
So you see you don't have to have one on the roof, this is blowing through a window opening. The unit below is the AC unit.

Thank you everyone,

I found a window unit & a portable swamp cooler at home depot that I think are going to do the trick!

The window one is basically a full size swamp cooler & should cool the bulk of the place. The portable will help augment any weak spots.

I would love central air, am not sure what could be done for duct-work inside a mobile.

I might give this a try to, looks like a fun project!

You can easily install a package central air unit in a mobile home that already has duct . The unit sits outside & has 2 flexible insulated pieces of duct that goes under the home . One gets connected to the existing duct & the other goes to a return air grill you install in the floor of the home . Simple really .
You could also use solid duct & insulate it instead of flexible duct if you wanted to .

I had central H&AC for years, and when it quit, it wasn't working really well but my ductwork all got torn up. It was going to cost so much to replace the ducting that I went to window AC units and honestly I don't think I'll ever go back to central.

My electric dropped to half the regular bill. I only cool the areas I need cooled to the level I need them cooled.

If you go central, be certain you have good insulation, especially underneath. Good insulation makes a big difference for any heat/AC.

Ive got 2 of the $125 AC units. Im imagineing id need one in the bedroom and one in the kitchen/living room area. I don't think it would keep those rooms comfortable, just barable. I think id have to have a fan also in the BR.

When in a very dry climate like AZ. AC units when very dry do not work that well at all.
AC units cool by taking OUT the moisture in the house. Swamp coolers are just the Opposite they Put Moisture IN to cool the house down.
A ac unit in a area like AZ is just does not work well at all that is why Evaporative Coolers were invented in AZ.
Yeas ago to cool a house down people would wet sheets and hang them up in front of doors and windows. When the Dew Point is lower then 55º and it is that for quite a few months you don't want to take out moisture you want to put moist air in.
When you go to a restaurant and eat outside many have a Misting System that gives off a very fine mist surrounding you in Coolness. And that can be as much as 20º or cooler just sitting inside that mist area.
Now in the Monsoon time in AZ when Dew Points get above 55% Swaps are turned off and AC units take over That is IF you have a ac unit. LOL
And many days dew points can be in the 75º range which is tropical. Swamps just can't evaporate much at all in that moisture.

Very few places in the US compare with AZ and its dry heat.
You can talk about ac units all you want, but you want to put moist air IN to cool off, not take it out and make that AC unit not only working hard, but not very efficient at all. Now this is for the Driest part of the summer. We are talking about swamp coolers. Not all year round.
Like I said very few places can compare to AZ and its climate. Death Valley is one. But then again nobody lives there. LOL

TSC has a swamp cooler of sorts at their front door blowing out COLD air. Well, the whole store is cooled by AC. The air the cooler is recirculating is the cool air that the ACs are putting out. Likely the SC has a way to put in their water which, in a AC cooled room would last a lot longer

That is what I do for my humidifier on my CPAP machine. I sure don't want to breath in warm air in the summer time while trying to sleep. So I put a few ice cubes in the water so the water is cooler, even if I fill it from the Distilled Water that is kept in the frig. I want it cooler then that. LOL
