I am kind of a skeptic on some of these remedies but not for the reasons you would think. I totally believe that nature contains things to solve most of our issues. I cerainly believe that early natural medicine is the basis for our modern meds. What I don't always trust is people who push these things. I think there are a lot of scammers out there that are passing off bad info about natural rememdies or just plain passing off bad products. For example there are probably some brands of silver out there that are just crap and others that work. Anyway, I am willing to try things but I think I judge them pretty objectively because I don't automatically believe it is going to work like magic.
That said - We do use silver for strep throat. Two kids in public schools, two adults working in busy manufacturing plants with people who have kids, and an ever present family member who drives a school bus will bring strep into your home serveral times a year.
When I hear it is going around, then at the first mention of a sore throat we gargle with one teaspoon of it. Repeat that a couple times a day if it still feels sore. We use a brand called Sovereign Silver. It seems to stop it dead in its tracks with just a couple of doses. Nobody in my household has had to go to the doctor with strep in over 10 years.
I don't try it for viruses as not many meds can do anything about those. I have tried it on cuts and things that I thought might get infected. None of them have, but then you really can't say for sure they would have without it so that is a toss up.
I do take it internally if I have something like a sinus infection but I really think it works best when it can get directly on the parts that are germy rather than working its way through your system. I tried putting it in a sinus rinse but with that much dilution, just not sure it helped. And it is too expensive to rinse with it straight. Maybe you could put it in a nasal spray bottle and effectively snort just a little? I have not tried that yet but have thought about it.
