Craigslist Tractor

So I've been keeping my eye out for a small compact diesel tractor for use around the property (mowing, brushoggin, maybe post hole digging, snow removal) Nothing too overly demanding. Also, my storage space is limited, so I can't get anything too big.

Mostly I've been looking at the Kubota 6100's 7100's, and Ford 1200's. But most of them are priced way too high, so I watch and wait.

Anyhow, I saw this guy pop up and it seems like a pretty good price, though its quite a bit more tractor than those I listed above...

Does anyone know much about this model/engine/tranny? Pretty reliable? parts availability? Fuel consumption rate & efficiency? Stuff of that nature..

What do you think? Thanks!

Not about that particular model no. But small kubotas in general had a L2850 . They are good little tractors last well, well made and use limited amounts of fuel. How many hours does it have? Every 50 hours is the same ware as 3000 miles on a car.

Not a bad price for a Kuboto. My wife's cousin works for them and thus my uncle has I think a model just a bit bigger to that.

I am not a tractor expert but is a diesel harder to run in the winter especially in MI? Curious because someone mentioned that to me and I would LOVE to have a diesel later instead of gas as they have bio-diesel co-ops here (trade soy for fuel).

You really prefer live pto for snow blowing or bush hogging. Not sure on that model. It appears this model has live pto, tho sometimes is an option?

Funny, looks like a small tractor to me, the ones you listed seem pretty small to try bush hogging with, I would want at least this size tractor.... I would not want less than 24 hp for real bush hogging, same with snow moving, takes at least that.

True, The smalled tractors would have a difficult time with real brush hogging, it would be most likely a 4ft hog, and mostly to keep the trails clear.

I also like the small ones as they can weave inbetween trees real easy and make short work of setting up food plots out in the middle of nowhere.

The big or small "size" of the tractor is all relative I suppose, haha.

I already have a John Deer 420 utility, but its mostly a show tractor, good for parades and tractor shows, but not good for much work.

I'd give maybe 1200 top if I needed a tractor.

1200? haha, Good thing you DON'T need a tractor. The only thing you'd get in this area is a worn out lawnmower for that kind of money.

Must be an area thing, but around here, if it is in ok condition, go forward, backward, and stop, its going to be at least $2000

Be careful. On our local Craigslist, abnormally cheap Kubota's are a constant scam.

I'm not saying this one is, but be careful.

To put a FEL on that would add 4 k to the price I'd think ( if thats important to you I have no ideal ) .

It's not going to move a lot of snow or do much work with those turf tires on it

Might be a bit small and the comment about the tires is spot on. I'd look elsewhere, and try to get a loader. You will want one...

IF the tractor is in reasonable condition and is for real, I think it is a good enough price, good little tractors. IF it is Hydro, need to make sure that is good. I see many tire sets around to put it back to ag tires. Many are changed to turf tires. Put chains on the back when you do snow. Would work OK if level ground. IF you want a loader tractor always get it with the tractor, adding one is big money and can be big headache (nightmare to attach unless the KIT it is made for the tractor)....James

At 23HP, I'm skeptical if the PTO can properly run that generator.

Good for mowing, but that's about it, IMO.

Ah the wonderful south!!

It is a small old tractor not capable of much. It has turf tires which are good for nothing but mowing. Good tractor for a very large city lot.

I'd attend some auctions especially on bad weather days.

The mid-pto was optional on those tractors, and it may have one if it has the belly mower. The mower is going to be a 6'.

Mowing looks like it was this tractor's mission in life. Durn sure ain't gonna pull much with those tires.

The engine is almost 30hp, the pto is live and is about 24hp. It's fuel efficient.

The iron that goes with the tractor is worth $1500, so you're buying the tractor for 2000 bucks.

If it was me...check out the front end. AWD can be expensive to fix if it's broke. Check out the shuttle shift (it's mechanical, not hydraulic). And go over the usual things you'd look at with any used tractor.

If it checks out, I'd paint it, put ag tires on it and a grill guard. And sell it for twice what you paid for it, if you don't like it.

Like Mr. Robertson, I'd be happy, happy, happy.

I have a 30hp Kubota (b7800) that has turf tires on it with chains. I've pulled a 7000lb skid steer out that was absolutely buried in muck. I can brush hog trees up to 5" in diameter depending on the type of tree and plow up to 400 inches of snow every winter...and can do it while sipping diesel. Honestly I have a brand new 70 hp Kubota that I rarely use because my puny 30 hp can just about do it all...with a lot less fuel. However, my 7800 is about 20 years newer than this 2550. I also wouldn't buy a tractor that didn't have a FEL or couldn't add one cheaply.

Ive found the 30hp and under especially with hydro, 4wd, loader seem to be in very high demand! I went with a jd 950 gear tractor/no loader with 875hours for 3500$. Same size and condition with hydro and loader seem to go for over 10

The problem I have with hydro...

1. I've seen more than one tractor broken, because guys would bog their tractor down and try to romp and rock them out, or otherwise do something that overtaxed the hydo, and then your transmission is broken.

2. When you break it, it's harder to find someone to work on it and it's more expensive to fix.

My 2 cents, YMMV.

If you have a 420 JD utility "farm tractor" it should pull any thing if not more than the tractor in the ad would. I regulary used a 5' bushhog, 2 16" bottom plow,16 blade disc with mine! Hate I sold it. Wouldn't if I had back. I wanted a 420W at the time.

As to price, in this neck of the woods.....it'd be twice that.

Im not sure its the HP that is such a limiting factor ," I think " its more the weight . 30/24 hp diesel has tons of torque .

Edit: Opps , I was responding to a pm .
