No Guns Allowed!
I was up this morning doing my usual reading of blogs and ran across this one. It's just too much for me. Why not just paint a big bulls-eye on your back?

I'm going to get a few of those signs for my neighbors house ! At least they will go there first ! Just like the front door mat I saw recently that said -- Go next door my neighbors have better stuff !

While yeah I do think the signs are foolish, I also have this example of my friend: he lives in a really rough neighborhood, theft is normal. He gathers nasty old bicycles, rehabs them and gives them to the neighborhood kids, whom he knows all their names and chats with them as they walk by.
He's never had anything stolen, ever. He found that to be a happy consequence of his "being a good neighbor".

The RR blog is my third stop every morning!
I remember when I first moved to Dallas in '68 the police department every Christmas season had what they called their "shotgun squad". They'd have officers with shotguns standing in the coolers of 7-11 stores and others, waiting for armed robbers. Several thugs were ventilated. Nobody knew which stores had cops in their coolers, so the robbery rate plummeted after a couple years. Word was they always had plenty of volunteers.

Great blog! I agree that private gun owners help subsidize the safety of their non-gun owning neighbors. I sleep much better at night with my 38 special on my bedside table and my husband's 22 magnum at his bedside.
While visiting my son in TX, I noticed on the outside of the establishments door was a huge sign with TX gun laws. No illegal guns or illegally carried or concealed guns allowed, punishable as a Felony, prison time, fine... etc, etc. If I were the criminal with the illegal gun I would immediately think twice about entering this establishment crowded with side armed cowboys. TX law has it right.
Also, since Newtown, there have been new laws written in my state to protect gun owners and hand gun permit owners and I am happy to see more people in my area openly carrying their handgun. However, when I apply for gun purchase or gun permit, I see our 2nd Amendment is increasingly infringed.
Apparently even the most conservative states are caving to the demands of the anti-gun people. Just one step closer, every time.

I read the Rifleman magazine and there is a section in the magazine that highlights confrontations between gun owning homeowners and burglars entering their home, especially during the day. I noticed that in most instances the homeowner was in the kitchen or other room and away from their gun that is usually kept in their bedrooms. It was difficult and a very narrow escape for the homeowner to reach their guns in time. So I've decided to carry my gun on my side no matter where I'm at in or around the home.

I wish a supporter of that gun free zone stuff would explain why they think it will reduce violent crime. I'm baffled. Would removing all the locks at the bank reduce robberies?

Good choice. The one time someone tried to enter my home I did not have a gun on me. Now I carry from the moment I get dressed until the moment I go to bed. My philosophy is if I can't put my hand on it *right now* I don't actually have it.

You wait until your dressed? I have a mini 22 mag revolver and holster that clips nicely on my boxer drawers until my britches are on and I trade up on my carry piece.
After our states open carry law was clarified a number of local businesses posted "no firearms allowed" signs. Within 10 days all but one took them down because so many regular customers stopped patronizing their businesses.
The one business that still has its sign up is a bar and should have been posted even before our state carry law was clarified as bars have always been patron packed firearm restricted.

I'd never presume to tell anyone they have to have guns in their home.
I expect the same consideration from them, don't tell me I can't.

Funny stuff. Why not go all the way and get a sign that says "I live alone, no gun, no dog, back door unlocked".

What is it about being a gun free home that makes you proud. I'm proud of my shooting skills, years of accident free gun use, and that I've helped train others to significantly improve their skills. It took a lot of time, effort, and practice to get to a skill level where I felt comfortable and confident carrying a gun and potentially using it in a crisis situation.
I'm proud of my daughter who just graduated high school summa cum laude. It took her years of effort and study to reach that achievement.
Why are you proud of not having a gun in your house?
Some folks fear snakes, rats, or spiders and are happy their home is vermin free. But I've never heard someone claim pride that their home was snake free. Is pride / proud another one of those words where the definition has changed and I failed to keep up?
BTW - I fully support your right to have a gun free zone in your home.

I don't have a problem with anyone choosing to have a gun free home. My problem is with people who exploit gun tragedies such as Newtown in an effort to ban guns nationwide; to limit or take away the right of law abiding citizens who do own guns. There is not one recent gun massacre that could have been prevented by making new laws that do infringe on our 2nd Amendment right or gun bans that would have prevented these tragedies.
I am not going to go into details here, but for those who want to ban guns you do have State laws you can change if you have the majority. Keep it to yourselves and in your own State. The rest of us, although you are indeed violating the U.S. Constitution, can decide if we want to live in your state or not.
And to reiterate, even in our most conservative states where the the 2nd Amendment is followed, infringement is creeping in more and more. The NRA which does represent us is losing power due to political demonization and even the most pro-gun politicians are caving.
This is where it starts and where it will end if we don't stop it.
My girlfriend who has a squeaky clean background, not even a speeding ticket, was denied the purchase of a 22 rifle that she intended to use to kill varmit; you know rabid raccoons and such. This was in the State of TN.
I'm concerned.

DigApony - How can your girl friend be kept from buying a gun? - she has a 2nd amendment right to have a gun - she needs to make some noise about it - get a lawyer and sue - or call the NRA and get some advice about the matter

Haha. I should've clarified. At the end of the day my carry piece comes out of the holster and goes on top of my dresser. I also keep a 12ga pump in the bedroom. When I wake up, I carry my pistol in my hand to the bathroom where I put on my pants and boots and resume carrying on my belt. Don't worry. I am always* armed.
*except where prohibited by law.
