Modern Times

This is a shot of my next door neighbor tilling-up his 30 acre truck patch this spring. That's my driveway in the bottom of the photo. He sits next to a 100hp Duetz air-cooled diesel. The PTO is running an 8' rotary tiller. There is no mufler, and he sets next to the exhaust pipe. No worse than a loud Harley, I guess. But he admits to being hard of hearing.

I've asked if he cares if I take photos of him. He said he didn't mind, but he wasn't going to pose for one.

Thanks, it is interesting the way we set up our lives, isn't it?

Would want some sort of hearing protection, tho I've been around loutish tractors all my life myself, at least dad and I kept mufflers on them....

I'd say he must have brakes on the trailer to keep the tiller from pushing the trailer.... notice the cinder blocks being used for weights.

Doesn't make any sense to me, if it's okay to use the engine to drive the tiller why isn't it okay to just be on a dang tractor

Don't know if the man in the picture would take your advice about hearing protection or not, but I sure would. As my Dad grew older, having worked in a noisy automotive factory for over forty years, he grew more and more impaired, to the point people sort of just stopped talking to him, because they were so embarrassed to have to shout to make him hear.
