Living simplistically

Heres a couple in LA Living a simplistic lifestyle. Kind of cool. Its funny tho how we can make this type of living look easy. when really it takes a lot of work to keep it moving.

Wind, I think you may have misspelled "hmmm".
Traditionally, and according to Webster's, "hmmm" only has three "m"s.

More is considered overly dramatic, and less is considered lazy.

Ha, I'd think if you were living simply, you'd use smaller words rather than larger ones.

Well played Sir!

My wife and I desired a simple life when we retired and we even named our blog that but we have found it hard to maintain. Compared to our previous life we live very simply but we have found it hard for two type AAA++++ personalities to go as simple as we thought we would.

Here's a good one. They have 1/5 th acre lot in downtown LA and grow 6,000 lbs of food per year on half of it - crazy!

The 3m hmmm is sooooooo funny! I did not know that. But Wind is correct. They are using the wrong word. If they did not want to use the word "simple" because it is so overused they should have used "simplified" as in "Living a simplified life". (made easy or uncomplicated).

We have always lived simply. It isn't hard unless you make it that way. My brother says we do it the hard way because we don't use all the modern ways. We keep it simple by not having to do all those things they do. The end is nearly the same except we don't have to work so hard to get those things to make it easy. We eat the same foods, ours are fresh or seasonal. We plant a small garden and extend the season. We plant and grow what we use, as we go. They grow a big garden and put it all up in a short time period, making it a lot of work. They have a lot of specialty equipment to keep up. We have a shovel, fork and hoe. Raised beds are so easy this way. We are very compact, taxes are cheaper. They are SOOOOO busy, we just stay as busy as we want. They are servants to their stuff, we take little, to live. We conserve, use, reuse everything we have, no wasted time, energy or resources....James

Path to Freedom
I really enjoyed all of these videos but it is really amazing how the family in this video puts all their space to work for them. Often we have folks come on HT and ask if they can grow enough on an 1/2 acre to feed their family. I think they should watch this video and realize that if you want it bad enough you can do it even on a city lot!

Sadly the Dervaes family has gone completely and totally bat guano crazy.
They trademarked a bunch of phrases and words and are suing anyone else who uses it.. regardless of whether or not that other business had it first.
And technically, the term 'urban homestead' has been around for a couple of hundred years.
They are even suing libraries etc.. for using that term in classes.
They are suing businesses that have used that name for 15+ years.

Because of all the crazy and all of the serious trouble they have been causing, they have lost my admiration and support.

And there is nothing 'simple' aobut living the way we choose to do.
The exact opposite.
It would be so simple and easy to just go to the store to buy everything all the time, to just toss stuff in the dryer etc..
Totally not simple to plan laundry based on weather, figure which, what and when to plant, weeding, picking, putting up...
Yeah..

Yeah..
Thanks for pointing this out. It is sad that they are acting like that because I am sure it will turn a lot of people off to something that could be so positive.

We are moving into town in about a year I just love these people who "farm" on a city lot. I'm actually getting excited to turn the two lots into an urban farm. Unfortunately, we can't have any farm animals, including pigs, goats, and chickens.

I thought that was all behind them now. I went to visit them and they seemed really nice.

A lot of cities are changing their rules to allow these animals (ours doesn't allow pigs, but everything else is okay). Perhaps you could be the one to start the change.

I've always lived a simple life and it tickles me to hear people get so excited about it like it is something so new! Some of my siblings say that I live a "Pollyanna" life and just don't understand how I don't desire all the trappings of modern life and can survive by "going without". I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything at all and I feel good being frugal and self sufficient without all the credit card bills that THEY have!!! I bet I have alot less stress than they have too!!! I have chickens, goats and a small garden that provides plenty to eat and preserve. I buy very little from the store. As I get older I am trying to convert things to make it all easier for me - like raised beds and moving water tanks, tools etc. closer to house. Creating more shady places to sit down and rest while working outside. I have about 2/3 acre in a small community.
