This is an anti-GMO post

So you have been warned.

This is a TED Talk from a scientist who is sharing information as well as concerns that were known in 1996 when GMOs came on to the scene, as well as other facts that have been learned since. It is calm, emotionless and straight to the point. Share this with those who do not care for too much passion-as it will not affect their blood pressure.

It is worth 18 minutes of your time.

Now ask yourself why the FDA/USDA has allowed this to go as far as it has. And no, it's not to Feed the World.

Thanks for the link. I read the article rather than watch the video. I don't need to be convinced. My question is how to get GMO's out. And now they mysteriously find GMO wheat that was supposedly destroyed.....right.

I am much less worried about GMO in general than in the way they used to splice the genes. If they splice another plant gene directly that is not so bad. The apparently had trouble doing that so they used a virus to move the gene. Fooling around geting virul material into a plant genetics is asking for real trouble.

Naw - one fellas opinion, fine and dandy, all is well.

It's good to see other sides of things, agree or not; and this is fairly bland stuff, not the over the top hatred that does set people off.

A week or so ago I posted a link to what Target is doing to remove GMOs from their brand. I went by Target on Saturday and bought a bag of Simple Balanced Tortilla chips - they are organic and tasted fine. Cost: 2.99 a bag for a large bag. Compared to Doritos, I thought they were better.

Amazing what can be done when a company begins to listen to their customers. I think if enough people wanted to express their concerns to corporate America, things would change. After all, it is all about the money...and losing money is not well received by stockholders. Target is listening, I bet a lot more companies would listen as well if they figure out that people prefer non GMO food.

Many years ago Steve Goodman wrote the perfect country and western song. The lyrics included momma, trains, prison, and getting drunk. The perfect GMO thread is possible and for real action tie in congress, food stamps, farm bill and for good measure terrorists. The perfect GMO thread.

GMO's are a concern, but ALREADY 80% of the food in the grocery store is banned in other countries for being toxic health hazards. You probably served up some to the kiddos just last night!

http://www.babble.com/babble-voices/...s%7C%7CfamE%7C

That's a link to an article on parenting website where they're talking about how many pre-packaged foods contain toxic substances that other countries have banned, but that we here in the United States allow.

You can't trust NOTHING that came in from outside your fenceline.

Corporate America controls all of our politicians regardless of party. The rest is all an act.

Yep.

The entire political debate can be framed in one premise:

It is a band of thieves arguing about who gets the rights to divide up the plunder.

Poor Dh, he brought me a handful of round-up sweet corn seed a bit back. His buddy gave it to him, Dh said he didn't want to hurt his feelings by saying he didn't want it. I dought my Dh even knows what GMO(everything around here is called "round-up corn"" Round-up _____"ect.) stands for, he just knows I'm picky,....

I think this short interview with Dr. David Suzuki (an actual geneticist) explains GMOs and their danger very simply but completely

It took him seventeen minutes to get around to stating one basic fact..... "We really dont know what we are talking about". It took him another minute to conclude that engineered potatoes may be the answer to the mice and rat problem that has plagued mankind for centuries.

It took the good Dr. Suzuki less than 30 seconds to make the very same statement "we really have no idea what we are talking about".

I do admire his efficiency!

Is that the same Suzuki who runs those high-yield farms in Japan using hydroponics?

Thanks. I thought a calmer, more though provoking thread might be in order. Especially one from a former GMO supporter who is now speaking the truth that seems to be eluding Big Science these days.

Many gene splices that can not be directly done are done using Agrobacterium sp.

From Wikipedia:

Agrobacterium in humans

Although generally seen as an infection in plants, Agrobacterium can be responsible for opportunistic infections in humans with weakened immune systems,[3][4] but has not been shown to be a primary pathogen in otherwise healthy individuals. One of the earliest associations of human disease caused by Agrobacterium radiobacter was reported by Dr. J. R. Cain in Scotland (1988).[5] A later study suggested that Agrobacterium attaches to and genetically transforms several types of human cells by integrating its T-DNA into the human cell genome. The study was conducted using cultured human tissue and did not draw any conclusions regarding related biological activity in nature.[6]

Industry needs to make money to stay in business, and genetic modification is one of those ways that is attractive.

Farmers need to make money, and GMO crops offer various was of using less energy and providing higher production.

As a consumer, I would like to have a choice not to take this particular chance with my health or those of my children. For farmers to make money using non GMO crops there needs to be a system of labeling that allows them to sell their produce at a premium to make up for the added cost and the lower productivity.

We all can't raise all our own food and prevent every possibility of coming into contact with questionable chemicals or other products that might be harmful to our health. What we do need is a clear and honest method of labeling. If a beef producer can get enough more from his meat by using non GMO grrains, he will do it, he just needs the incentive.

Don't think so. Dr. David Suzuki is a scientist and was a University Professor until his retirement. He is also the host of The Nature of Things and has been for 40 years as well as hosting some PBS science series.

Well that puts a new look at this. A PBS thing. Enough said, no wonder it took so long to get to the place where gee I don't what I am talking about, but I did it for 18 minutes.
