Elderberries in SC

Has anyone else noticed all of the elderberries I'm seeing in the low country? I've never noticed them around here until last year, and now this year there are tons of them. I think they have just moved into the area. No one seems to know what they are, which enforces my theory. I'm seeing them just all over the place in Orangeburg, and Calhoun Counties. Anyone else noticing them?

I've not seen any up this way but if you have extra I'd love to come dig up a couple bushes.

Well, I don't own any of them, they are growing along the highways, particularly in low and wet areas. I drove hwy 176 to Charleston last week, and they're over by the coast too. I haven't been traveling a lot, but have seen them in Richland, Calhoun, Orangeburg and Charleston Counties. And, not just here and there, but large patches of them and frequent.

No digging needed! They are one of the easiest plants to start from cuttings. They root and start leafing out in water.

This is the first year in the last 7 or 8 that we have had normal precipitation in my area - been in drought or abnormally dry conditions for that long - lots of plants that have been fairing badly during that time are loving the wetness.

I think this is the answer. I talked to a friend today who said she has seen elderberries lately. She said that they like a lot of water and we are having the wettest summer I can remember.

Anyone have a pi9cture of them? I was recently near the coast of NC visiting my wife's family. THey had lots of what I thought were blackberries. They had canes with thorns like raspberries. The unripe berries looked just likr red raspberries, but the ripe berries were black.

I can post one in a bit. What you were seeing were probably blackberries or dewberries.

Or black raspberries. Here in PA, that's what is prevalent.
