Massey Voltage Regulator replacement

I will be replacing the voltage regulator on my 1964 Massey Fergusson M165 soon. Is there anything I should keep in mind? It seems like it should be pretty routine. Easy access, make a diagram so everything goes back exactly, unplug/disconnect, remove and replace and reconnect. Should anything go wrong? (I've had help diagnosing the problem so we're about 99% sure this is the problem.) Thanks, Mary.

A diagram is good but pictures with a digital camera/cell phone are better.

If you can, unbolt the old one leaving all the wires attached, then attach the new one, then just move the wires one at a time... So long as you have enough slack in the wires..

Does it have a generator or an alternator?

Sometimes when not used for a while, or you get the polarity reversed, the generator might need to be exited to get it going proper again.

Basically just touch a wire to get electricity going the right direction.

In mid 1960s, probably is an alternator and then never mind......

Yes, it has an alternator. (And is a gas engine, if it matters.)I used it a couple of days ago and it ran great. Then went to start it and silence. Not even a dead battery click. Cleaned terminals and replaced the battery, took the starter and selanoid off and tested them, checked that all the wires were connected well, checked the switch was working. We ran a wire from the positive battery post up directly to the switch (bypassing the regulator) so I could start it to bring in our just baled hay yesterday. It ran great for those 4 hrs or so. Just made sure to disconnect the wire to the switch as a safe guard.
A digital pic is a good idea, think I'll have both a diagram and a pic. Now to find the part !
