Kitchen colors to go with (ugh) blue
Kitchen colors to go with light blue?
The kitchen in the house I just bought has light blue countertop, and the floor tiling is white with light blue designs. Curtains are white and blue (but easily changed). Since the countertop and floor tiles are in such good shape, I just can't justify changing them....but I really hate BLUE!!! Especially this light, baby blue color.
Is there a color I could paint the walls (and change the curtains) to make it look not so overall blue? All the appliances are white, and cabinets are varnished pine (I think). I don't want to paint the wood, just the walls.
What would go with baby blue to make it look more up-to-date? I was thinking maybe a dusky gray (with a bluish tinge instead of blackish tinge)? I just can't think of any colors that go with light blue!!!! Would love to have a maroon or forest green...but just don't think those will blend.
Any artist temperament people out there with suggestions????

why not a terra cotta color to the intensity you like.
or my favorite, a nice clear buttery yellow.
Or even shades of green that are to the blue side rather than the yellow side.
Heck even a red that is to the blue side rather than the orange side.
Of course, there are shades of purple that might go with it, but do not imagine that in a kitchen.
I'm not one for greys.
Or you could go with the taupe colors, but to me that is not kitchen color.
Just some ideas off the top of my head.
This might help with seeing the color I suggested.

Picture would help visualize what color would go well on the walls.

A pale yellow and blue go together well and the yellow would warm up the cooler blue.

Ditto Angie's suggestion of 'clear buttery yellow'.
This might give you an idea of how the colors would look together.

I second the terra cotta colors (peachy to dark)...I REALLY like that combination w/blue!
My friend had the same. Blue counters, white/blue tile floor and white cupboards. She had her adjacent dining area painted a burgandy color. There is a window wall and half walls, so not a whole lot of it. It looks really nice! She has grape-vine swags on a rod over the window...I think that helps keep things light.

My kitchen has medium country blue walls, oak cabinets and floors, black appliances and RED accessories. The counter is laminate that is supposed to look marble-ish but the veins in it are purple. Could you paint it a light pearly gray? You could use red or brushed stainless accessories. Try a wallpaper border to bring in other colors. I also like the idea of yellow with blue.

Ours was blue when we moved here & we have brick thru the house, terra cotta bricks. Our counter tops were the brightest yellow -love yellow but that was overwhelming.
Have since ripped down the kitchen blue-flowered wall paper, even tho it had sm yellow daisies running thru it. Now its cream & green, I sponged green squares around the top of the walls for a green/cream border. Counter tops are laminate-green.
I should post b/4 & after but I think only after are on the 'puter.

Add a buttery yellow and a deep blue, maybe even some medium blues with hints of white.

Nice pix WiHH, a backsplash might change the whole feel of the kitchen.
I also like the terra cotta idea, especially with pine cabinets. If you can change the feeling of the blue from cutsie to mediterranean/italian feel it would be much nicer.
Also, once you have moved in all of your stuff, the blue will subside some. I am the queen of buying a house, not liking the old counters, cabinets etc and never getting around to changing them. New appliances, all my stuff and it's not so bad.

I think wood might be a good color to choose.

I think your color choice will be determined mainly by the look you are after. Are you looking for something calm or energy filled. Something restful to the eye or enlivening. I have a pair of walking shoes that are bright blue with lime bottoms and when I wear them even my feet feel happy? My own kitchen is gray with black and red accents and a mexican tile floor. Gray is a very soothing color and also goes great with baby blue.

Here's a link to House Beautiful's slideshow of 23 kitchens:

At the end of the slideshow there are many other links to kitchen ideas. Lots of really great color ideas to help you decide what you'd like.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll have to take a picture when I go down this weekend. There is really only one wall that can be painted...all the rest of them are covered with either tiles (white, with some botanical prints), or cupboards.
I really like the terracotta idea, but the dusky gray appeals to me, too. Love the Sherwin Williams web site! That helped immensely.
I DO know that I don't want yellow. Hate yellow. Hate blue. Don't know why...just do. Can't explain it. The bathroom off of the kitchen was a pale yellow with yellow curtains. I painted it taupe with white curtains and chocolate-brown towels and rugs. Wrought iron decorations and metal-stamped wall signs. Just couldn't handle the yellow. LOL.

Go to the fabric store or check dish towels or bedroom bedspreads in a store find something with your blue in it and see what other colors are in the design, choose a combination you can live with and take it to the paint department. It's a good way to get the most updated colors... I despise blue also, I am a red girl.

I would find a way to cover up as much counter as possible with a large place mat in a much brighter color of my choosing to draw the eye away form the blue, and maybe in an inconspicuous spot try tracing over the blue design in the linoleum with a red, brown or black sharpie pen if it is not a big design and see if that works, then a couple of bright throw rugs. I covered a whole kitchen floor with a big 5 by 7 once it was a good temporary fix.

I think your gray idea seems good. I'm a big fan of pale gray on walls- gives a room a very cool and calming look (although it can backfire and just look dingy... I know this from experience)
Whatever you choose, go lighter! Pick your color, then pick one shade lighter than that one. It will end up being closer to what you were picturing than the original choice.
