Found these little critters

While I was working outside I heard a squeaking sound coming from the ground near my garden. I located the area, saw patches of dead grass covering it so I removed the grass and found these little critters buried in a hole....what are they??

Not moles. They look like baby field mice. Google a picture...

Short tails, my guess voles. Otherwise known as "cat toys" around here.

Tooooo big to be mice, tail is too short and feet too pigmented to be rats.

My vote is voles too:

I do think they look more like lasergrl's photo...tail is so short they must be voles.

They are voles (Microtus arvalis). Here's more for comparison.

Absolutely as cute as a button! BUT you don't want them to grow up.

They get much larger than mice, don't they? What do they do?

Eat my beets from the root up, so that when I go to harvest all those nice 3" diameter beets all I get is 1/3" of beet that has been hollowed out from the bottom!

They loved my beets, as well as my peanuts and potatoes. They are vegetable eaters, especially root crops.
They don't swim well.
