Little town growing food everywhere

Didn't want to hi-jack the Farming in Russia thread.

Thought you all might be interested in this video. A small town not far from where I grew up is in the midst of a really neat food revolution. There are garden plots everywhere, the police station, the train station, on any spare land.

The Power of Small Actions: a talk given by the lady who started it:

What I love, is that a few people came together and said "let's do it"! No planning or red tape. And now the whole town is in on it. The local authorities who would probably would have said "no" if they'd been consulted first, saw how well it was going and are now fully on board. The school has a horticulture program, kids are learing to build chicken houses raise small livestock for meat and eggs.

Love the idea, especially having a chef cooking fresh meals at schools. When I was in school, we had a relatively small garden at the back of the property which was part of community share garden. Us students never had the opportunity to plant anything, nor eat of it. All I remember eating at the cafeteria was pizza, ramen noodles, poutine, ice cream, french fries, juice, and packaged snacks overloaded with sugar... With a diet like that, no wonder we were driving our teachers up the wall.

PrincessFerf, just look up Incredible edible Todmorden. Todmorden is the name of the town. There are a number of videos about it.

Yes, some of the "meals" they've been serving at my son's school this year aren't fit to throw to the barn cats. I pack him a lunch.

I live in a small town that is working on this. My DS works at the grade school and the after school faces program does a community garden. He also does meals from the garden. We have neighborhood gardens on empty lots here. It is a rural community and we have changed the ordinances to allow ag related buisneses to raise and sell produce on site. We have planted a lot of fruit trees and bushes in parkstrips and the parks for everyone to enjoy. There is a monthly market for produce and hand made products. We want to make it weekly....James

Every city and town needs to start doing this. Food security is very important and only the food you raise is guaranteed. My small city has an extensive allotment program and free gardening classes. Last year they allowed backyard chickens. Unfortunately some are going to spoil it for the many because they are not keeping the yards clean and are attracting coyotes and bears.

I watched 1/2 of the first vid. All they showed was cooking stuff, not growing it. Made me hungry.
