Unnecessary Propane Tanks

Question: I have two 100 lb Propane tanks that were used for cooking and heating that I no longer need. I have verified that the tanks are personally owned and not just provided by some company to use. One is about a quarter full, the other is empty. I currently see two options - vent the one with the quarter tank of gas and then remove the valves on both tanks and tote them down to the recycle yard or try to sell them on Craig's List. Other ideas?

................Take them to the nearest propane dealer and have them check their certification , if OK , then they should be refillable at most propane sellers !
.................With this knowledge I'd list them on Craigs list for ~$99 a piece and see what happens . Any propane left in them is an added bonus and just increases their value to an RV'er looking for that size tank . , fordy

Yeah.....good luck getting the valve out. I had one go bad and it took an unbelievable amount of "umph" to get the old one out. Having the safety collar in the way really limits your access with a wrench.

Around here, they sell for about 1/2 of new ( new being about $125 ), depending on how much certification date is left. Costs us $25 here to get them "re-certified".....which I suspect is a visual look over, and stamp a new 12 year out date in the tank. Depending on where you get it filled, they don't even glance at the date.

I would fill them, store them, and save them. You never know when an emergency could come up making you need one for a grill or even for heat.

New valves, save for prep. Someday a full 100 pounder will be pure gold.

Thanks to all, I currently live in the city of the newly wed and nearly dead - St. Pete. It sounds like they're going to bring around $50 a piece. I'll get a picture posted today...
