I don't know about other rural areas but cracked windshield's are the common state of affairs here. We have 5 vehicles and 4 of them have a crack or chip in the windshield. The only one that doesn't is brand new.
We will get them replaced but they will crack again. It's a pain. Logging trucks and gravel roads are death on windshields.

All of our vehicles have chips or cracks as well and I just use one of the kits you get at Autozone to seal up a chip before it gets to be a crack (its an injected clear epoxy). That usually stops the chip from becoming a crack but if I didnt get it in time we replace the windshield right before inspection time.

In Florida you get your windshield replaced by your insurance company for free. If it gets a crack, blamo, new windshield. I've gotten my truck's replaced once.

If it has a crack and you get stopped by a cop, they can ticket you, so I have no issue calling the insurance up. They even send the windshield dude to my work to do it in the parking lot. Easy peasy.

You say For Free. But how much is your insurance premium?
Most insurance companies that have windshield coverage WILL replace it for no out of pocket cost. But the Premium is higher.
So in reality you DO pay it one way or the other.

I had one replaced years ago on my Suburban. Can't remember now how it did get cracked.
But I did NOT want it to go through my insurance co. SO I called several places and asked for a quote in getting the glass replaced without insurance paying for it.
There was one place that gave me a deal. It was Auto Glass Specialists. NOW it is Safelite.
And they gave me a quote of $125 LESS then any other glass replacement co. in my area IF I paid cash.
So guess who did it. LOL
And they did the switch at my work place~! That was so neat. Go into work with a cracked windshield and go home with a new one put in.
IF I remember it was somewhere in the area of $225 to replace that large windshield in that Suburban something like that.
But I did not have to worry about insurance forms that way.
And besides the insurance I had at that time, would PAY me BACK 50% of what I paid in over the year.
That is if NO CLAIM was in that calendar year. That is why I did NOT want to run it through my insurance co.

I pay state minimum insurance, nothing fancy. It's not a add-on that I get free replacement. It's something in Florida law that says they have to replace windshields. I don't know the details why, just that it works.

I never replace them if I can see through them. They'll be broke again shortly. Once every few years if I go to Arizona, I get a repair order, but they never follow up, especially with out-of-state vehicles.

New Mexico doesn't ticket for that stuff as far as I know. They are just happy if you pay your tags once a year....Joe
