Mice in water troughs

I have water bowls fornthe dogs and a trough for 1 boarded horse. Pretty much everytime i look in em there is a drowned mouse in there!!!! Any ideas on how to avoid this? I doubt drinking water with a dead mouse in it will do any of my animals any good!!

Either get rid of the mice or give them a place to drink.

it is highly likely that the mice have gotten into mice or rat poison, and they are looking for water as it burns their innards and they go to water immediately..thus..drowning in the water and dying of poison..

I suggest not putting out mouse or rat poison as other animals can be affected by it

I've seen people put a piece of screen or something in the trough so the mouse can climb back out.

The mice need their own drinking supply. Or you could put a board or something in the water (diagonally, so one end is at the bottom and the other end comes out the top) so they can climb out.

i suggest that you make yourself a 5 gallon pail mouse trap . you must be infested with them . take a pail and drill 2 holes across the top for a wire. drill 2 holes centered in a can , swear with peanut butter . slide it on the wire and tighten the wire across the pail . put 2 inches of water in it and prop a little board or something so the mice can run up when they go to get the peanut butter they flip off the can and drown.put it along side the barn wall or someplace out of the way.

We actually use water tubs as rat traps in the barn. Or at least we did until we got cats. No longer a problem! I would be much more worried about the mice than the dog's water.

I used to have the same problem, a small dipper by the trough was my simple solution. Didnt have to pick the lil buggers out by hand anymore.

Wait wait wait...I have to get this vision down correctly in my head.

The dog got a dead mouse out of the dog watering bowl...carefully carried it outside and laid it down...and then gleefully rolled all over the drowned mouse proceeding to smash it deader than...well...a drowned mouse?

Bwaaaahaaaahaaaaa!

Oh lordie, you have to share a picture of this dog with us.

Another good reason to have a dog.

All his crazy ideas!!

The golden is very well behaved dog. Walks better off leash than most dogs with can with a 500$ kevlar titanium harness. But he has always found the nastiest thing around. Then roll on it!!! Usually some racoon poop

Thanks for the picture...longish hair so the stink stays in! Love it!

One of the reasons I'm hesitating on getting another dog is that I know no matter how kind and loyal and obedient a dog I get...the Mr's spoiled rotten Princess Brat Dog will drag any other dog over to the dark side with her wicked self.

Lovely property btw.
