Pretty sure the birds get it. Apparently the type of cherry tree is more attractive than useful and has small not very fleshy fruit.

I'm not positive but I think they're ornamental only and don't bear fruit. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The cherry trees in DC are ornamental and do not produce fruit. It is illegal to pick a blossom, twig, or branch off of the trees and you will get ticketed and charged with destruction of a resource within a national park. You also are not allowed to climb in the trees.

They are Yoshino Cherries. Yes they are ornamental but they can bear fruit. Maybe not every year and not in quantity but they are edible- mostly pit, little flesh and not as sweet as most humans like- so what is produced is eaten by birds and other critters.

They may produce small tiny fruit (i've never seen any) but even if they did I wouldn't call them edible. The pollution (exhaust fumes, rubber from tires, ect) leave a dust on everything, and its a dust that doesn't wash off without scrubbing. Would hate to see what my lungs look like....lol

lol- I was referring to the cherry in general not specifically the DC ones. But you are right, anything that close to a roadway would not be edible in my book!

I know this is very off topic but since we're talking about the DC cherry trees, I was remembering going there as a kid to see the flowering trees and my mother being nervous that the "Moonies" would abduct us kids and brainwash us into a cult. Do you all remember when that was the big fear for kids? I do remember the Moonies handing out flowers on the steps of monuments. I wonder what happened to them.
