Replacing Asphalt Shingles

Most of the roof shingles are in good shape, but for some reason, two small areas, the shingles just crumbled away.

Last owner put the cheap shingles on, but we'd like to get a few more years out of the roof, before complete replacement wit a metal roof. I do have some of the unused original shingles, from the last job.

Is there and easy and effective way to swap out the bad shingles and not make the leak worse?

There are flat bars that do this stuff. They can get under the shingle and up under the nail. If its nailed right there should be nail at the top of every slot and and another about 6 in each way about one inch from the top of the shingle. You'll see the nailing pattern after you get the first row off.
Get one and start at the top row above the top row of bad shingles. take the nailout just above the slot (there should be one there if its done right) then work your way down tearing off. Then just reverse yourself going up. Try to do it when its not to cold but not to hot. getting the first row off will be easiest when its coolest. Less chance of tearing. When you put the new ones in if its a little warm then you will be able to bend the shingles on each end of the row up so you can lace in the new ones.
Make sure and check under the tar paper to see if there is a reason for that area going bad. There will be an argument about tar paper . Some say yes some say no

The cost of metal roofing has come down. Go ahead and put the metal roof on. The price is so good now, we are having standing seam done on ours.

Shingles are not the waterproofing. The tar paper UNDER the shingles is what keeps out the water. The shingles primarily protect the tar paper. Unless the leaks are in a valley or there are other situations we don't know about, it may be time to make the changeover now. Once you start walking on a brittle roof, you create new cracks and leaks. If you must, as suggested, use roofing tar - preferably with a long handled mop or using a ladder or something to spread your weight. Once you start patching, you keep patching.

I use a http://www.amazon.com/Dasco-640-24-S...bxgy_hi_text_y

and on some this tool is excellent
http://www.amazon.com/PacTool-Intern.../dp/B00005A1K9

and a properly layed asphalt shingle does shed water, on wood shakes the tar paper is the final deterrent of the water but one can shingle a roof with out underlayment on asphalt shingles and it will shed water. i DO RECOMEND AN UNDERLAYMET
