Guns & Venting
(I know we have a Gun section but its low traffic)
How many guns do I need to keep around the homestead. I am at the age now that I think about what if I die(I am older than most of the men in my family lived to be, but I hope I live a long time). I have a Son and Daughter, but I do not feel I need to leave a bunch of guns to them. I thought about selling some, but can not decide if I should. Example I have 4 Remington 1100's, 5--9mm, without going into anymore detail about what Others I own----do I need to keep 4 1100's and 5 9mm. I do not hunt any. I have bought several guns in the last year that I have never shot(price was right)Seems like used guns are bringing a good price now, but I also do not need the money at this time.
Its not just guns, If I were to Die all of a sudden---my kids would have a ruff time going through my things------I am a Hoarder(without the trash--lol) Everything I own I feel I might or will use it one day if I live long enough. Example I have 5 air compressors and 20 claw hammers, tools and socket sets I have not seen in years. This has been on my mind alot lately. Thinking about lightening my load so it is not such a burden on my family when I am gone. Thanks

LESS IS MORE. Think of the ones left to deal with what is left behind. You can enjoy going thru these things now and when you are gone you have left them real things that mean something to you. Let them know they will receive things with real meaning or lasting family treasures. It is what I am doing. Funny you brought this up.

I don't think you can have too many guns. I like to have some scattered around the place in case I need one in a hurry. Of course this doesn't work if your kids are too young. You will need enough guns to arm everyone that will be coming to your place when TSHTF and extras won't hurt. Also, guns can be an excellent barter item or sold to raise cash. Most of my guns are worth two to three times what I paid for them. great hedge on inflation.
Try to stick to a few popular calibers and one guage. I have 12 guage, 357/38, and 30-06.
As for the rest of the stuff, I would keep two of everything you think you might need and sell the rest. You can have an auction or you can just leave it to the heirs to have one.

I figure if I keep 12 to 15 that should be enough for the heirs----sell the rest maybe.

I agree. Look how the gun market is now and has been going for the last 5 to 10 years. If nothing else you will be leaving your heirs (children ) a fortune.

Why would you need 5 air compressors? Lol!
Guns are worth something, always will be.

Guns, ammo, tools, anything that will help produce food, These are the things that will be of value when we move into a barter economy. I hoard scrap metal, car parts, lumber, nails and screws. If glue had a longer shelf life I'd stock up on that also. Think about what you absolutely cannot live without an get more of it. TV's, video games, microwave ovens, most things electric, not so much.

If you have the storage space , write your will leaving the heirs the special stuff you want to leave them then store and inventory the rest with instructions for an estate auction to benefit them financially.

ha fire-man,thats a tough one,my take is,it depend on what your heirs like!as far as tools and shop stuff, you need to talk to your kids now and ask what they want or need and let them have it now to avoid conflict later,if they dont care for that type of stuff sell it off a piece at a time, you will come neerer geting a good price out of it.when we sold my dads stuff at acution I had most of the same stuff that he did so it sold for pennies on the dolar of the worth, now as far as guns, they hold value or make you money so I would hold on to them.so IMO,dstrubte your stuff NOW that way it goes to who you want it to go to and save some of the fighing of family later on when you pass! PLUS you can enjoy watching them enjoy there gifts now! good luck with your decision

LOL, Guess You missed the part about me being a Hoarder. Why would I need 20 claw hammers.
Let me tell you how it happened. I started selling at the Flea Market and later I open up a store selling used stuff. I bought MANY Storage Units. Over several years I would find things going through these Units that I would stick back---MAN STUFF--thinking I like this or that better than The one I own so I kept it-----thinking one day I will drag out my other one and sell it----but most of the time I never dragged out my other ones---LOL.
Picture this I got at least 7 framing squares, 20 plus measuring tapes, probably a 100 screw drivers, etc, etc. I got one deep shelf that I am using about 20ft of under my tractor shed with Many 5 gal buckets of nails, roofing tacks, screws, some bolts, etc, etc. I got a shelf above that one that is loaded with 100's and 100's of pvc fittings in organized containers, A shelf above that one that has probably 60 cans of spray paint(we keep using some of it), bottles and bottles of brake fluid, oil, transmission fluid etc, etc. Do You get The Picture----LOL. I kept ALOT of "STUFF" out these Units---I am a Hoarder----BUT all my STUFF is organized.
I rarely have to leave the "homestead" to get something to fix something.

If its the right thing to do to sell off some stuff, then have fun with it. Money is easier to store at least.

Having cleaned out my grandparents' homes recently, after they've passed, I have to say your family would GREATLY appreciate that!!
It is absolutely overwhelming to stand there, looking at the mass of "treasures." You don't even know where to begin.
Frankly, the guns are the least of your problems. They'll be happy to see a pile of guns.
It's the rest of it that'll bring out the Maalox.
Start now, and let them know you're doing so. What a gift!

Need is a very subjective word.
I do not "need" all the firearms I have. I haven't even shot half of them. I am a collector. Collectors are always looking to add to their collection.

At a minimum you'll need one for each hand. Of course I'm thinking handguns. Long guns...whatever gets the job done. I'd lean toward fewer guns, more ammo. All the guns in the world won't help if you've no ammo.

We're gonna have to revoke your man card... Any man that thinks he has too many guns or tools can no longer be considered one of the boys...

Don't get rid of the guns - pass them on to your kids and let them do what they want with them - who knows there might be a time when guns will be very hard to get - they will always have value - just make sure that you also have enough ammo for the guns - I kinda think that things are going to get rough in the future - when the U.S. goes broke and can't give away all the goodies that people are now use to - there could be riotes like there are over in Europe - you may need your guns then -
