not too sure, but hydrogen peroxide deluted and soak it some, then gently hand wash.

Or try a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, soak and then wash. This gets stains out of most anything.

And ask in the Fiber Forum - those ladies stick together down there and have lots of fiber related knowledge.

soak with lemon juice... add salt to it and move it around a little, don't scrub or be abrasive with it... just move to cover even. ... keep the cloth damp with lemon juice for 24 hours... rinse with cold water.... repeat if needed...

Are they really "rust" stains? I have had very good results getting out the yellowing stains on white linens that result from long time storage. I soak the item in BIZ and water for 24+ hrs. You have to mix the dilution very strong, maybe 1/4 cup to a gallon of water. And it could take more than one soaking. But I have salvaged alot of pretty linens this way.

After washing, let it dry flat in the sun.

Agree. Could very well be starch. Woolite first with cool water. See what happens. If it remains, lemon juice as suggested.

If it's just yellowing, oxy-clean soaks work well.. .Or vinegar and water...

My wife sells a lot of vintage fabrics, so I've learned a whole lot about what takes out what stains.. she likes to brag on her results..

yup, pretty certain its rust. would like to try the lemon juice first, that kind in a bottle? and full strength? thank you, I don't usually like this sort of item, but where it came from makes it something I'd like to keep. she gave it to me as a thank you for some very small thing I did for her, she was a very nice lady.

I also thought, it'd make a nice setting to sell my homemade goat soaps on in my home-studio-gallery. I'm all into wabi-sabi, and having things that 'mean' something rather than just stuff. so I really want to save this thing!

If the lemon jive doesn't work, try Whink. Many grocery stores sell it in the laundry dept. I've even used it in silk.

Whink would probably work, but that's a little harsh isn't it? I use it for rust on toilets! I know that Iron Out makes a product for getting rust out of laundry.

I don't have any other suggestions for how to remove the stain that are different than those posted above, but I do have an idea of what you can do if any or all of the above methods are unsuccessful. Soak the doilie in coffee or tea for several hours (or until it's dyed dark enough that the stains don't show) then rinse with water and let dry flat.

My mother and grandmother would use a mix of cream of tartar and water or glycerin on their doilies and crocheted laces. Works good.
