If you could get any old tractor you wanted
The 8 N thread has been hijacked pretty bad, but it started me to thinking.
If you could just go get a tractor, and for the purpose of this thread, nothing newer than 1975, what would it be ? Regardless of what it is, it will be used but in solid and good shape.
My liking for 8 Ns aside, I'd get a Farmall 856 diesel with a 3 pt. Big enough to work, small enough to not be a PIA to use on smaller places. I farmed with one for years and it was a 6 row farming machine. It couldnt pull a really heavy tandem disc, but anything else I wanted to do, it was everything I needed.
I have seen a few that seemed worth the money , but the money was just more than our budget would allow.
What's yours and why ?

We were in about your same situation back wehn we first bought our farm. We found a David Brown tractor for under 2000 dollars and are still using it along with 4 more that we have picked up. One was used for parts for another. Love the fuel useage and we can hook almost any type piece machinery to it. We use it to plow our garden, do the hay, haul our wood and do any of our farm chores. Of course, it is now part of Case/International/White industeries but if you can find one you will love it.

I worked for a dairy farmer who had nothing but Massey-Fergusons,biggest one he had was a 175.Where I am now,a MF 135 would be all the tractor I'd need. ETA..actually,would be more than I need, but I'd like to have one anyway..

For a small place I liked the case 530 diesel a neighbor of ours had seemed like a good all around tractor and very easy on fuel this was a 60 something model. Either that or my Minneapolis Moline 602M.

I wont name a specific model, but it needs live hydraulics and PTO, wide front, 2 or 3 point hitch, and enough power to pull a 3 bottom plow.

I put an awfull lot of hours in the seat of a Massy Ferguson 180. Was probably the most economical tractor I ever owned for the work it did on the farm.

the thousand series fords are tough tractors and I'm partial to blue. we use a 3000 for the garden and its perfect for that, the 4000 is a good all around workhorse small enough to get in tight areas but big enough to pull a three bottom plow with ease, the 5000 is a good small acreage workhorse and on up to the 9000 for bigger fields. I'm lucky enough that granddad left me with almost the whole series and I've picked up the missing ones at local auctions. the 6000 is weird looking but fun to drive with the automatic transmission. sorry I can't pick a favorite.

Dad and Pawpaw farmed with Farmalls forever and again. But in the late 70's I think it was, the ranch ( Pawpaw was ranch manager til he died then Dad took over as manager for the absentee landowner ) bought a Ford 5000 and like you say, it was a workhorse. They replaced a late 50's 560 with it.
Then Dad bought a Ford 8600 and a couple years later a 9600. That 9600 was an absolute beast, then we got a TW -35, cab, air, stereo. Boy oh boy we were in the big time then.
I had a International 1566 that was rated with more Hp than that TW-35, but the 1566 couldnt hold a candle to the TW

This is my MF-175 Diesel.
63 HP but still not bad on fuel.
A front end loader would be nice at times, but for my main purposes, it's nearly perfect:

Hummmm, I have a Ford 3000 Diesel. It's a great Tractor!. But I would really like a Ford 5000 with a loader. And an IH 656 The two of them together would do anything I could dream up.
Andrew.
