Here's the deal, people: There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

There is energy in water. Chemically, it's locked up in the atomic bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. When the hydrogen and oxygen combine, whether it's in a fuel cell, internal combustion engine running on hydrogen, or a jury-rigged pickup truck with an electrolysis cell in the bed, there's energy left over in the form of heat or electrons. That's converted to mechanical energy by the pistons and crankshaft or electrical motors to move the vehicle.

Problem: It takes exactly the same amount of energy to pry those hydrogen and oxygen atoms apart inside the electrolysis cell as you get back when they recombine inside the fuel cell. The laws of thermodynamics haven't changed, in spite of any hype you read on some blog or news aggregator. Subtract the losses to heat in the engine and alternator and electrolysis cell, and you're losing energy, not gaining it--period.

Yes you are right, but to store enough electrify would weigh about 1400 to 2000 pounds. Storing hydrogen is 1/4 that weight.

The reason that we are depend on out side fuel is that we have not Drilled enough wells for Natural gas or made it available to just anybody. If you have a natural gas to your home it is a low volume. To compress it so that you can burn it it needs to be high volume or it will take 8 to 10 hours to fill your one tank with a machine that you will hook up to your car. I pass a service station about 50 miles away and since I don't have natural gas available in my area there would be no way to use it. As for now the only comers are the drilling employees in company trucks. Some city's have one but the average driver cant fill up their.

The reason we are dependent on energy from other countries is this:
We are a wasteful nation. Plain and simple. We waste crude and coal and natural gas and everything that is used to power our cars, light and heat our homes, manufacture and transport goods which we don't really need, etc. Until the entire NATION changes it's energy usage habits we will ALWAYS rely on foreign energy until it is all used up.

This just keeps coming back around! I was splitting water into it's component gasses in the 80's, but not because I thought I was getting something for nothing. It was because you can make some REALLY cool explosions that way!

I also made wind generators back then, and mounted them to a mast on the back of my truck to measure their output at different wind velocities and people thought I was running the truck off of batteries and charging the batteries with the wind generator. SERIOUSLY!

I think the law of conservation of energy should be taught in first grade, right after they learn to tie their shoes.....Joe
